need some welding doing

Is there anyone in birmingham who could weld a vw pd inlet manifold for me in exchange for some legal tender.Got a alloy tube that needs welding on its outlet.

Looking at the pic you want something making that bolts to the manifold rather than the manifold welding? If that's the case you'd just need a rubbing/template of the flange to provide the shape and bolt centres along with a few measurements

thanks for the reply,yeah i did consider that and to be fair the part does exist and can be purchased from allard at considerable expense.Cant see it being difficult for someone to run a bead around the alloy tube i have and join it to the manifold.It wont be used with a standard turbo or boost pipes so there is no need to make a OE like standard part.In short welding it is by far the easiest option.

In the event you can't find anyone here, find a local college that has welding or engineering on it's courses and tickle them for a favour.
Failing that find someone who does alloy motorcycle frame repairs.

Or fit a threaded item? Should be enough meat in the cast manifold to take a thread.

Personally i'd say it's a swings and roundabouts thing... was asked to do a similar thing to a throttle body recently, customer had had it done before and pointed out the nylon bush in the return spring- said the last time he had it done that melted and don't worry about it. I said why didn't you strip it to be told they're a PITA to reassemble so i ignored him (contrary to McDonalds motto the customer is in fact usually wrong ) and made a bolt on hose end as the body had three M6 holes in it's face. It took maybe 20mins longer assuming the casting would've played ball... if it'd fought me (spitting/manky weldpool due to being cast from old cat food tins) my way would've been faster and/or neater. Either way it's less permanent i.e. returning it to stock to sell etc

3 holes (by the looks of things) in a bit of plate versus cleaning up a used manifold... price would the same either way from me. If the customer had already cut out the plate leaving me just the two welds and a hose retention bead to roll it'd be cheaper than messing about with a used manifold

gutted!may have to order one from a Bulgarian seller on ebay.37 quid,just sent them a message if they can supply just the flange.Being stainless steel i could do it at home or at work,would take me all of 5 mins.

back to the drawing board,that ebayer wont sell me a flange.need this sorting asap as its holding things up.

if you say you can work steel at home or work just make a steel one, get some 6mm plate hole saw in middle correct size, drill your mounting holes weld pipe on, job done!

I did think about that as a last resort,but was unsure of where to get steel in that thickness.In all my years of welding cars ive never brought steel usually pick stuff from work scrap bins.Really thought it would be simple enough job for someone to be able to do on here,i had a friend of a friend cut off and switch round the end tank of a pulsar inter cooler in my rover turbo days a job that was a lot more complex.But i cant seem to get in contact with either of them.

theres a guy that does one off laser cutting ..but the £37 one dont sound too bad , he'd prob charge 25 at least to cut the flange

Thanks steve,i may have another option.Emailed a steel seller on ebay and they have a laser/flow jet and they can make me a single flange(i presume the more you buy the price reduces) just have to send them a basic drawing and dimensions.Really hope they can do a good price as i would start making them,fingers crossed
