I need something that's not fixed in place.
They are big bales so too heavy to pull the twine through to shorten it (if that makes sense)
They also get used twice a day so the bale gets about 6" shorter each time ,
So once a new bale is opened there is only about 6" of spare twine to use. Then the twine increases in length by about a foot each time.
The knot I remember was a loop in one end, them some sort of loop on the other and you could put your hand in the loop to pull tight.
Much like hood says, there is a free end you pull to undo it.

Look at the Honda Knot and leave a long tail on the thumb knot. tuck the free end doubled up around itself
But better still are big ratchet straps just hook the ends together . Occasionally lubricate the metal to metal parts .
