My XTZ 660 Tenere refresh thread.

Recently I embarked on a project to give an old Tenere a new lease on life. Currently I am working through some carburetor problems with the valued help of some forum members.

So far I have put a new carb kit in it,synchronised the carbs and am trying to get the bike to run well.

In addition to the above, it's had new brakes and drive kit.I just had a message that my new clutch and cable has arrived from the UK.

Nice bike, I used an vintage TT600 from 1980s (the competition version of the common XT600) as fun weekend transport for many years. Great fun

I bought a lot of spares from a UK supplier who sold a lot of parts for competition Yamaha bikes,
I can't think of their name but will send a message if I remember - maybe use Google to see if you can find their name if you are finding it difficult to find parts.

The original problem occurred at any reasonable rev range if you tried to give it more throttle. If you Rode it hard it didn't seem problematic.

I wonder if the problem was caused by the carbs being out of sync? Find out tomorrow I guess.

Back at the carb problem tomorrow, have a meeting regarding my septic system this evening...

Meanwhile my parts arrived, never before replaced a bike clutch ,have done a few HGVs and cars though. I could just soak the plates in any synthetic motor oil I suppose?

As long as it's a bike specific oil meant for wet clutches.
Don't use car oil.

Yes,going from the previous owner who was a bit of an Anorak.

No but I Rode it sporadically for a summer,it has plenty of comp as far as I can tell.

No issues with starting

Plug looked grand before I pulled it down,have a new one I will install.

There is a little filter above the inlet valve, did you replace / clean it?

Have you taken the emulsion tube, part 37, out and checked the holes are clear?

Sorry 1993 but it's the only one which gives a description of most parts.

Yes I checked that,it's clear. There was no real debris in the carb. Some varnish on some surfaces and the o rings were dissolving.

The 600 and 660 Carbs seem.pretty much the same.

Mine is a 92,so that carb is the right one

So I put the carb in the vice,levelled it off used the clear tube method and the fuel level was well over the top of the bowl with the float set at 25mm

Took off the bowl,adjusted the float tank to 28mm,set up the clear tube,the level was right on 8mm below the mating surface. Bob on!

Put the carb back on the bike,turned on the petcock and now fuel ran freely out of the sodding overflow pipe.

Taken off the carb again.

This carb reminds me of my ex wife.

Just found out I never put the drain screw back in!

Well now I discovered that I have ripped a carb rubber,so that's that until I can get a new one.

An old bike all gets old at the same time.

So,onto the clutch.

I wonder if that's been leaking for a while as that would cause popping on the overrun?

Tourmax do decent carb rubbers, I have a pair on my TRX.

May well have been,I did have a look at the rubbers first time I took the carb off. It's been off and on a half dozen times since though.

They are normally pretty tough so I'd say that might have been rotten already.

I bought some rubbers from Yambits in the UK. Their service has been great.

After marinating my clutch plates for 24 hours,I pulled the clutch cover only to find my clutch plates to be in fine order. Any how,I changed over to the new ones.

I have to re-set the clutch arm because there isn't much throw in it. Guess it has to come back a quarter?
