My XSY-AT1 VFD has died

Using the lathe this afternoon (Little Clarke CL-300) I was probably running it too slowly, and it caught on a rough piece of slag from the plasma cutting. I wasn't quick enough to back off the drive, and the VFD quickly came up with a Err - 1 - Short Circuit/Current Overload/Power Module protection, and refused to move. Not TOO concerned at this point - tried to power off at the mains, no change. Found parameter 77 and reset it with 54321 hoping for great things - nope - still Err-1.

Thinking MAYBE I'd somehow toasted the motor in less than a second, I disconnected the motor, but STUPIDLY without it connected, powered back on and immediately got Err-4 - Driving Circuit Failures - and now, even after reconnecting the motor - and resetting - I can't get past that point.

Does anyone have any idea what to try next please, apart from throwing out a VFD I've probably used for less than 2 hours total

I think he means Machine Mart, the source of the Clarke lathe.

I am a little unsure how or why they might help with a VFD bought from a third party in China that was not originally fitted to the machine.

Can you post a link to the manual for the VFD?

The manual runs to both sides of a single sheet of paper that I can copy and paste but it’s light on details!

Is the attached document the one for your inverter?

It seems like there are many 'versions' of manuals for the AT1 inverters. Some better than others.

Not exactly comprehensive

Power off. Disconnect motor and check resistance of the windings. The motor is probably fine but that will rule it out.
Try another motor.
Open up the vfd (power removed, give 24h for any caps to discharge).
Look for burnt IGBT's/resistors or bulging capacitors, get some detailed pictures up here.

10 mins is plenty to drain the caps down. I usually only wait for the charge pump led to go out.

New vfd time? @Kram used to be able to find very cheap ones on Amazon. It's nice to repair stuff but sometimes it it easier to cut your losses.

Ive had the over current errors trying to run my harrison mill to fast before the gearbox oil has warmed up. Never had an issue getting it to restart after cycling the power. Not that this is going to help you.

I hate to say it, but I think your VFD is scrap. If it was an expensive branded VFD it might have been worth getting it repaired.

I also have a cheap chinese VFD which failed with 'error 4'. Opened it up today and found one IGBT blown and another component visually damaged.

The much smaller component that has also blown.

It will not be worth fixing it (time + money + risk that it will still not work after replacing the visually damaged components). If it was only the IGBT I might have taken a chance to replace it but the small (unknown) component will be very difficult to replace.

New cheap Chinese VFD it is!

I ordered a cheap VFD for £40 ish which I am taking a chance on to run a '440v only' motor. The VFD is still on its way.

It is only 0.75kw but should work just fine, if not, it is easy to get a refund on Amazon.

My motor is indeed 240v - and that is VERY tempting. I'm just a little nervous that the one I've just blown up was rated 2.2kw, an dthe motor is only 550W !!

The 0.75kW single 220v to 380v arrived.
I was quite shocked to see the size and weight of it.
It appears that there are some decent components in the drive as the VFD is much bigger and heavier than some of the other cheap Chinese VFDs you can buy.

To give you an idea of the size, here it is next to another 1.5kw 220v single to 220v three-phase VFd.

The manual is decently sized (177 pages) and provides adequate information.

I have not had a chance to try it out yet but will hopefully get the time this weekend.
