It's being in the right place at the right time. I have a lot of people I know who ring me when stuff is available . Speaking of which I had a call to day on a very very intresting item that weights 5 tonnes. I going to look at it this week

Had the headstock gear cover off today just to have a look. All nice in there. Them gears are massive. I took the tailstock off and got it as far as the front room. To heavy. Not far off the size of my dogs bed.

Yes. Things are getting seriously heavy now.

Looks in incredibly good nick. Even has your trade mark red paint interior.
It’s hard to get a true sense of scale from the photos but that tail stock is a beastie. Wish I had the room for it. Good buy by the looks of it.

I put the tailstock in the boot of the car. But it disappeared in to the spare wheel well and got stuck. Took me ages to get it out.

If you can lift the tailstock it’s still a tiddler!

Can just about lift it. But cant carry it to far. I don't think I will need anything bigger. If I do I will use your dsg

Guys. I need some opinions.
The Harrison will need a strip down and a good clean. I will sort any issues on the ways. Some scraping of the cross slide ECT.
Now I was up the yard this morning having a look. It's been hand painted long ago. I don't want to paint bright colours. But once I have gone through the cleaning process most of the old stuff will be removed. There is know history of this lathe. I have been talking to tony at lathes UK. The machine is very rare and dates around 1920s. Tony wants to do a full spread on the machine for his web site. I need to protect the machine. I don't want to hand paint it. Spraying isn't a problem. But what colour. I hate this kind of predicament. Its looks like it was originally painted with some dull looking enamel paint.

I would be tempted to get a large paint brush, cut the bristles down to about an inch long, get some brake cleaner and WD40 (by the gallon) and get scrubbing. Brake cleaner will remove most flaking paint and the WD40 will leave a light film on it.

Is there any part that you can see that still has original paint? Inside a cover perhaps or behind the Buck & Hickman plate?

I am just about to get the tailstock out side. And have a close look providing I can pick it up.

I understand and appreciate this. I still need to strip the machine as it's full of years of crud.

I also love the way it looks. Whilst I love the fully restored fresh from factory look sometimes I wonder if it is always the right thing to do?
That lathe could well have made vital parts during WW2 - definitely a piece of history.

I agree mate. I want to keep as much of its original as possible. I will see how the cleaning process goes
