I have a steel cutting saw from Lidl for box section. This is one is only gonna be used for wood really.

Do you have a link to that on Ebay, I have been looking for something to chop multi materials for a while but i always worry about how well they cut metal as i have always been use to only cutting wood

It was sold by Evolution. What I did miss though was it was 110v but that’s not really a problem.

That's where I got mine, 'refurbished' but it looked like new. I almost fell for the 110V thing too.....

I unboxed it today and was amazed. No signs of use as reported on eBay, and plenty of guts behind it. One complaint is whilst it will cut a 300mm timber it won’t then do it at 75mm thick as the rear corner of the frame gets in the way, then once you flip it over it isn’t perfectly square with the other side. It’s close but not perfect and yes the hold down fixings are pants if you’re used to say a Makita bacon slicer. Nothing that couldn’t be engineered in. Overall though, all things considered I’m very happy for £91.

I made a start today on the bench. Considering the corners of the building aren’t square due to the footprint of the building (one corner where I’m working is around 4’ Shy of 90’ so getting a mitre was just a case of cross marking the corner on both pieces of timber then following the lines dawn on the timber. For strength I’ve cut the Underside of the 9x3 with a mitred rebate whilst leaving the face untouched so it looks like the main legs go to the floor but I can still get a good fix to the base. I’m gonna get my cuts sorted then build it into the corner and fix it to the wall. I’ll use stainless Unistrut squares under the frame to keep the timber off the floor by around 8mm and probably paint the back of the timber with oil based Rustoleum to protect it as I don’t wish to replace it for many years and I want something solid. I’ll also use gorilla glue at each joint. It won’t be going anywhere. I may even try to source a sheet of 6mm steel for the top once complete.

I used 12mm ply over 8x2 c16s that were glued and dowelled underneath. The ply was just glued down, and left with about 20 concrete blocks on top. Its made a nice working surface after a quick rub and two coats of varnish.

Not a fan of steel bench tops except for welding as bits bounce further when you take things to bits.

Ok, so today I managed to get the carcass in and finished bit of a mindf*** messing around with out of square corners etc but I think it’s worked out ok. I never bothered painting the bottom of the timber, I stapled visqueen polythene to the underside the screwed Unistrut stainless steel squares to keep it spaced off the floor. I have a few lengths of 8x2 to make a top and I’ve ordered a sheet of 18mm hardwood ply to be delivered tomorrow as the 8x2 is only softwood so I’ll skin it and dress the facia.

The other thing I find really useful is a scoket at the front or just st in the knee whole, so extensions or power tool cables dont lie over the bench

Managed to cut and fit the 8x2 boards and my ply was delivered so that’ll be tomorrow morning before I fit that. Here’s where we are.

Decided to put an end on the bench and glued and screwed it to the pillar. I think that Gorilla Glue is awesome and if the substrate is damp it doesn’t matter at moisture helps the glue to cure!

Got my ply liner fitted this morning and thought I’d make use of the corner space with a couple of shelves, gotta try and find a supplier of 40x2mm or 3mm angle in lengths over 2m though. I’d ideally like 40x15x2 so I don’t have to rip a length down. If anyone can suggest a supplier who'll post please let me know.

That would be in my living room - no way I'd get it mucky in the garage.

I do have a few of that type of mat that I use in the garage. A guy in the car club worked for a company that provided them to offices and shopping centres, if logos changed or they lost the contract they had a load of mats that were useless so they were available for a contribution to the company nominated charity for that year.

Been up the garage for an hour. Dismantled my daughters old wardrobe earlier today and had a bit of a brainwave....why not rip apart the drawers and remake in the size I need for the bench.....?
Well the first one is done (after I fired a nail through the back edge of the draw straight through my thumb and out the other side ), a quick wrap in magic electrical insulating tape and I have made a start on the next one. Time to call it a night though before I upset the neighbours behind!
Don’t worry they aren’t staying pink! I have the correct RAL5015 sky blue once it’s complete.
