Yes the early ones were before they started with all weird and wonderful electronic controls.I dunno I thought the Sundstrand 10EE's used a similar drive to the CVA.
The later all-electric motor generator ones were smoothly variable to 2500rpm or 4000rpm depending on what option you ordered.
It's only for centres and centre drilling, surely everything else would have been bored for accuracy.It just shows the mindset of the engineers who created these lathes.

Not ideal as your only lathe - that's why I am keeping my lovely Triumph as well.
