The first photo shows one of the problems caused by quick change tool posts. The travelling steady is too close to the centre of the post because they were designed to be used initially with lantern tool posts then 4-way tool posts. The extra over-hang of the quick-change means that you have to wind the compound back away from the steady to allow for the overhang. In the pic you can see that even though the compound is already wound back a bit the tool would still foul the fixed steady.
Why is this a problem for the CVA? On the side of the cross slide there's a knob that is an infeed stop to be used when cutting threads - you can just see it on the right hand side of the dial. Usually when threading you would swing the compound round to work parallel to the cross slide and use that for infeed keeping the cross slide in use for quick-retract and return. Of course, if you do that then the compound isn't pointing in the right direction to be wound back away from the steady.

Yes I sorted that just moving for balance.
Is this a full set of change wheels?

If it's not a full set it's very close. I think it's supposed to be 48,50,55,60,65,70,75,80 and 2 compound gears 48/127 and 72/127. You'll have to check.
I paid a LOT of money for my set of those. Back in the day before I had a gear hobber I might add or I would have made my own.

Been having a look around it this evening. Rubbish light though.
Can't see or feel any wear on the bed or carriage. A tint bit on the cross slide but I think the nut might be adjustable.
Not heard it running yet. Chap assured me it was fine but a bit worried about an oil leak from the hydraulic drive unit.

I would not worry overly much about the oil leak I'd start by finding out what oil it uses and give it an oil change or two. If it's still got oil on the sight glass it can't be leaking that much.
I'd do it before changing those belts though just in case the new oil does start pouring out.

Mobil DTE heavy which is VG100.
Will any iso 100 hydraulic oil suffice? The Monarch uses medium heavy which is vg68. Not sure why they are different.
Also I don't quite understand why they have used an hydraulic drive. On the Monarch 10EE they use if for variable speed - infinitely adjustable between 0 and 3000rpm and yet on the CVA you have a dial which clunks into each speed like conventional gears.

Yes the early ones were before they started with all weird and wonderful electronic controls.
It's only for centres and centre drilling, surely everything else would have been bored for accuracy.It just shows the mindset of the engineers who created these lathes.

Not ideal as your only lathe - that's why I am keeping my lovely Triumph as well.
