I often wonder about my family’s involvement in Ww2. Both my Grandfathers would have been in their late twenties early thirties. Dad never speaks about the war, him and his two sisters had it tough. I do know they got sent down to a farm in a Kent when the Blitz got bad. Only thing Dad mentioned, and very recently, was sitting on top of the coal shed and the noise as all the bombers and aircraft flew over on D day. The waves and waves of them. He would have been 6 or 7 at the time. The only other thing he ever mentioned was jumping into a ditch when the road him and his sisters were walking on got bombed. With both Grandfathers being engineers, Paternal with the railways and maternal with in the automotive industry, I don’t know if they ever got shipped out,or, if their skills were used for the war effort here.
The one that always intrigued me was my Great Aunt. She was a proper character. Big motorbike as transport. She was an absolute guru on Silver plating after the war, so can only assume it was a skill learnt during the war. Would love to know what she was plating for the war effort. Unfortunately, what ever it was ,and whatever she saw during the war must of been pretty horrific. Again never spoke about it, but definitely had demons in her head from it. Lovely lady who ultimately drank herself to death. Found outside in her garden ,having passed out and frozen to death in winter, full of booze . I think a lot of people after the war went off the rails in similar fashion. The deaths didn’t stop with the end of the war
