About 7 years ago I got made redundant, so in between job applications I decided to rebuild the engine in my old VW Passat to keep me sane as it needed new valve stem seals. Up until that point I had never even seen inside an engine "in real life". Did lots of reading, bought some new tools, a huge bag of parts- piston rings, bearings, seals, gaskets- and got stuck in. Learnt loads. Had to take a couple of bits apart a, didn't break anything... That engine has done over 100000 miles since I rebuilt it. So can't have made too bad a job of it!
I've since learnt loads more, and pretty much rebuilt the entire car. It's not about knowing your limits, it's about respecting the job in hand and approaching it in a methodical way and do as much prep and research as possible before you start. After all that's why I'm here, as welding is one of the last car related skills I want to learn.
