The main problem I find with novices and plaster is they can't get it on the wall fast enough and by the time they managed to do all the mixes and get the whole wall covered the first couple of mixes have gone off and they can't smooth it.

Btw I am not a plasterer by trade, I did a couple of years as a plasterer's labourer in my youth and picked up a lot then.

I do a bit of plastering on occasions and am pretty good at patching. I have done whole walls and ceilings but the stretching
and bending gets to me. I remember doing a bit of patching for a neighbour who said he had some plaster in the shed and we could
finish that off. For small jobs I mix in an old
saucepan with a potato masher, just because I like to see faces when I get the tackle out I mixed a bit of his plaster and then turned round to get my float and trowel and by the
time I picked up the mix it had gone off .
Why did he bother to save it for so long when a bag of Thistle is only about £6 ?

Easy fill for them Little jobs put in a few old sealed tubs from the bag and they save

My dad plastered a chimney breast when I was little, he was really proud of the results as he'd never tried before. Apparently "is it dry yet dad" and testing it with my finger didn't go down too well

My two dogs did it with their noses.
And then decided they liked the taste, so tongue marks as well

"Isn't", of course. :-) But I was going to say exactly the same thing about the title.

It's an obnoxious thread, in a forum that's mostly dedicated to helping people having a go at doing something they've not done before. It's disappointing how there's a great pile-on of people all trying to mention someone else's stupidity for having a go at something new.

Shame on you all. I bet you wouldn't do it in Kim's Landrover thread.

Just because you see something done, either on the web or in person, doesn't mean you can do it. Ever see a car sprayed by someone after they decided it was easy, cos they seen a video on youtube ? It ain't pretty .

I think the problem is that people don't know their limitations.

you can only know your limitations when you fail at the task, then there are others that think they fall short of a task but complete it easily to their surprise, if you don't have a go you will never know

Yes but most of the people on here work with their hands in the trades, and have enough sense to know their limitations.

I have been slowly but surely concreting mums garden - about 4sq m a month on and off for last 12 months. (access paths around huge garden, plus seating area, patio, and bbq area)
EVERY single pour has ended up with at least one dog print.
Except for one patch that was fenced off - and that has cat and bird footprints.

I watched a good plasterer doing our extension. A year later i had another room to do, how hard can it be? Ceiling first! knock up the muck nice & wet just like i see the man do it. Float in left hand, hawk in right (im left handed) Load hawk, jump up on hop up, go to put plaster on float. Wheres it gone? wtf? Aah big cow pat behind me on floor, repeat! By the time i finished i had plaster in my ears, hair & down my **** crack. Ceiling came came out quite well though!

I watched a plasterer do a loft conversion I was living in, some time ago. It had a sloped section that translated into a dormer window with curves and angles everywhere. He looked at it, gave me a stupidly cheap price and mixed up a giant bucket of plaster. He threw the lot up in about ten minutes it seemed. Then went back over it, then went back over it all again, and again...

All the time, dipping into the bucket the size of a wheelie bin, scooping out the dregs and filling in little imperfections. Then he was flicking water onto it, polishing, buffing, burnishing. It was amazing to watch the sheer dexterity of someone who obviously enjoyed their work. Finally, he scraped the very last tiny dot of plaster out of a now perfectly clean bucket to touch up a blemish you couldn't even see.

It was just incredible to think he had eyed up the job and mixed the perfect volume, especially in a complex shaped room. Finished in 2-3 hours iirc and most of that was finishing. It looked stunning in shiny burnished organic plaster. I was rubbing my hands over it for days, shame to paint it really.

I'm not quite sure I agree with the sentiment behind this thread that "muppets" shouldn't have a go. Because usually, you can muddle through and get it done, it just takes a lot longer than a pro might take.

I'll have a go at anything. Anything except plastering! That would have taken me days and the results would have been dreadful. Don't ask me how I know...

The one thing i wont touch is mains electrics. I can wire a plug but otherwise If i do there tends to be a loud bang & flash! i know my limitations!
