got my 1st avo meter of a mate who worked in a big company surprising how tough they are against breakage falling of the back of a wagon got a nice megger and a tiff digital clamp ameter with inrush current hold as well

and how about getting one of these toys to play with too one day you might want the most basic of oscilloscopes, signal generator and component tester.

I remember when fluke (we were a dealer for them) brought the first DMM around to demo.
The man selected "OHMS" and stuck the probes in a wall outlet.....It did not fail, it not blow up.

We had a maint employee take a "wiggy" voltage meter max. 600v, had to really stretch out the leads,
but got it across 11.5 kv.
It when poof, and vanished, he turned around to his fellow employees, arms still outstretched, with an astonished look, as
to where his meter had gone !
The mere fact that he could been killed never crossed his mind....he was moved to the office shortly thereafter....

One of the night shift sparkies at the foundry did similar, but he wasn't so lucky, flash burns to hands, arms, chest and face put him in hospital for a few days

Fluke are very tough IME. They're all we use at work. I have a 73 MkIII at home, I take it into work sometimes and check it against one of the big 6½ digit meters, always reads bang-on in spite of spending its life in a damp shed or the back of my car.

They also have proper HRC fuses, so if you do slip up and connect it to the mains set on amps instead of volts, the only pain will be in your wallet.

I had a Maplin 'Precision Gold' DMM like one of the previous posters, it was ok until I was working on a TV and touched a lead that was a bit higher voltage than I thought. Blew the main IC, I fitted a new one but it was never quite right again, drifted all over the place.

I use fluke in work, but that’s mainly because they are paying! I needed a decent meter to chuck in my bag when I was working out in Turkey a couple of years ago, and didn’t fancy having hundreds of pounds of fluke gear with me, I found an Amazon commercial which was identical to RS Pro meters for about 1/4 of the price. It’s sturdy (IP67 rated if you have the covers on unused ports), has good features and reads absolutely bang on compared to my Fluke 87v. The leads are not great (functionally ok, I’ve had them in 440v panels) but I’ve got some decent ones if I needed to swap them. I couldn’t believe they were selling them for £37 to be honest, I’m a bit gutted they don’t seem to do them anymore - I was going to grab a few other bits I was that impressed - the clamp meters looked to be decent as well.

Plus insulation tester I am using more and more for automotive fault finding.

Percentage duty cycle/Hz is where it is at for automotive fault finding - once you know you got a signal -it out with the scope.

Continuity testing with a multimeter at 0.5v open circuit - is not like going in with an insulation tester on ohms at 5v and 200ma thru a circuit.

Saves all the powering up circuits with a power probe or 12v and a light bulb -measuring volt drop.

No really none of them are high spec meters - you wanna see the Fluke gear some Auto techs have - bluetooth transponders/recording meters.

When @Ubique shows his head later - he will show you the most expensive drawer full of multimeters and recording transponders known to man.
