Talking about productivity I find having everything within reach makes all the difference!

Organisation does also help, As soon as something isn’t easily accessible it slows any job down I personally find

Not only within reach. But knowing where it is also helps

i operate from a small space so everything is tightly packed

I’ve found it just gets soooo worse as the memory fades. Years ago, it was a doddle living with chaotic storage as I still knew roughly where everything was.

today I bought what I know full well is at least the third of these I have here somewhere.

Finding stuff is the problem, and lack of organisation.

I can wander round the workshop at work three times and still not find stuff / stock.

God knows we try, we spent over two weeks tidying up and binning stuff in the autumn.

And totally reorganised the storage and workshop.

Still having issues.

So all of my hand tools have a home and I’m overly tidy and either put them away before Iv fully finished a job or cleaning them before putting them back in there home

Iv worked with guys that waste hours looking for tools on the floor or trying to find what job they last had them on

that drives me nuts

A weekly issue here. Finding the tool takes longer than the job itself.

But there's one stand out Zen chaotic example, wot was thus:

Usual looking and not finding tool ... then realising I'd sold it a year ago.
Back on Ebay and bought another.
Package turns up. I open it up and there's another package inside - with my hand written address label on it.

When we moved in here 19 years ago we put a load of boxes from the previous house into the loft. They are still there, unopened. We have made the decision to do the same as @Parm and dump them without looking. If we didn't need them in the last 19 years........

its strangely satisfying after you’ve done the deed.

The question is, did it cost you more than you sold it for?

I'd rather not lift the fog on that lost time with used GY6 parts... I was the tool.
Probably I was 5 pounds up, but it was the overall phenomena.

I've been having similar thoughts recently....we are also looking to move house and to be honest moving is a lot easier with less stuff.

I have a 30 sm garage and 40sqm of loft which are both pretty full I have to say. I think I'd be happier with less stuff...might be time for a big clear out!

Today I was hanging my new garage air filter...making a bracket up. I had a choice...should I stick weld the bracket...or get the mig out? In the end I made a simple bracket with some nuts and bolts. It did make me think about what I really need to get a job done!

Mines reasonably organised and can find most things

Do have some stuff MIA tho

Lost my Sykes brake flaring tool, spent hours off and on looking for it, checked with friends and family but no joy

Gave up and bought a cheap replacement then a few months ago a mate moves back to the UK and finds it in his dad's shed

Theres a few more but my current head scratcher is I have a set of chrome moly front shafts for a Jeep JK axle, I should have a full set but 1 of the outer shafts is missing, have torn the garage apart and still can't find it

I've spent 3 weeks looking for the special sealer that is used for repro "cast iron" gutters....I refuse to buy more because I know I have it somewhere!

Reached the stage where the garage needs a clear out....I know this because I cannot find an m10 socket! I use m10 a lot (Japan cars) ....I have about a dozen of them...where on earth have they all gone!

I have a chap who rents a few square metres of my tractor shed to store 'belongings' (Actually it's in my Ifor Williams tilting trailer !) and frankly in my view the whole lot is worth less than one months rent so if I were he I'd chuck it all. I have another fellow who rents a parking space for his panel van, the head gasket is blown and the tyres are now flat - I've introduced him to two people who'd buy it from him but no he keeps on paying rent!

I suppose I shouldn't complain as it's to my benefit but it seems daft to me. Might be significant that they have both recently gone through divorce / separation.

I rented out a section of one of my buildings for storage, and the contents of a couple of tenants wasn't worth the expense. As turn around is fair play, I've been paying for storage for the past couple of years; but I have good stuff.

The relationship that people can have with their "stuff" is many fold and often complex - some hang onto it as it represents a part of their lives when things were perhaps not as miserable and seemingly pointless as they are now - to an outsider, not emotionally involved, keeping such "stuff" may all seem odd as it has nothing to do with money. I have a garage full of "stuff" - much of which I never use - but it reminds me of where I came from and more to the point, the journey I made to get it.

Been toying with the idea of selling one of my cars....had it over 20 years and the ongoing costs can't be justified....plus it's sat outside getting totally trashed. Just can't bring myself to sell it....too emotionally attached as it's the car I owned when I lived by the seaside and has a lot of very good memories.
