I had combo's, if you bought cheap British bikes they often came with a bus on the side. I had a couple of window cleaners bikes, just had ladder racks on them, riding with just a chassis is an acquired taste;-)
My last combo was before I took a test[pic below]. Stuff I have picked up would include a 1/4 yard of sand, towed a moggy traveler for a mates wife, picked up bikes and anything to big to stuff down the front of my jacket. They were really handy as at times we didn't know anyone with a car. Sidecars bolted on with 4 mounts and you could pull the chair off in maybe 15 minutes. I think it took longer to get them back as you always had to re-align it as the mounts never went back exactly the same.
No subframe needed, the sidecar mounts bolted to the frame. I suppose if you design it to be quickly removed/replaced a sub frame might be a good idea. The mounts were pretty simple[I made several of the clamp ones] and shouldn't be a problem to make, if they aren't easy enough to get.
