True ,the vehicle can be inspected ,however if advised unless blatant wrong decision made mot tester would probably get a warning and points against him

The best brake balance test is a road test
It will pull to one side or the other
It may even try to swap ends

They all pull to one side when braking because one end of the steering draglink pivots on the front axle the other is on the chassis, so when you brake and the front axle rotates slightly it tries to alter the length between the pivots but can't so it pulls the wheels instead.

Now I've had my fun at your expense, I do know what you mean about a road test but I use the garage brake roller test just to double check I've not got it horribly wrong.

That must make them shocking to drive! I really hate it when vehicles pull to one side while braking, I've never driven, worked on or studied Jeeps as my experience has been with landies.
That steering system sounds very, very flawed.

(And no, I'm not trying to start a Jeep vs Lr thing, I can point out plenty of issues with landies! As long as we can agree that they are still the best we'll be fine ).

It's not as bad as it sounds, firstly it all depends on how hard you jump on the brakes, so unless your doing an emergency stop you just counteract it by turning the steering wheel slightly to the right to compensate, and secondly since we drive on the Left in the UK it's not too bad 'cos at least you just pull towards the curb.
Now driving it abroad you have to be a bit more on the ball

Having owned Landies as well I know some of the issues with them, neither car is perfect but that's part of what we love about them.

I built a Ford based special many years ago that if you went over a humpback bridge, it would steer right when you hit the bump, then left as you came over the top. This being due to the effective distance between the steering box & the left hand track rod changing due to the changing height of the suspension. It took a bit of getting used to, it would be a nightmare today, every time you hit a speed bump.

This was more than your average bump steer, you had to really correct it. It was funny though, you just got used to it, it became a sort of natural reaction. The car would never have passed the modern set of tests & regulations, but this was 1969/70 & you just got on & did it then.

Another seatbelt question, the dog has chewed the centre seatbelt so an obvious fail. I've read through the thread and see that removing the seat means the belt is not tested, what happens if I remove the belt not the seat?, if it's not present it can't be tested or can they still fail it?.

This is a pure guess but if you remove the seat then the seat cannot be sat in and the belt cannot be used but if you remove the belt the seat can still be sat in without a seat belt. So I would say it can pass without the seat but fail if you just remove the belt. Tbh I've got no idea mind it's just a logical guess

Depending on the age of the car, it may not require rear belts, can't remember the cutoff year though. Yours is probably too new

Right. So I have it right then? Make it a 4 seater and it needs 4 belts.
Makes Sense.

Some mot testers are ok, but I've come across some absolute clowns. Had to take my old 90 to another garage for a test once as my usual station was shut for some reason. Ended up having a 35 minute argument with the clown as he had failed it on missing centre seat belt in the front. It was never fitted with one from new... Ended up pointing the relevant section in te testers manual out to him before he'd believe me. Same bloke failed Mrs dans little Jazz on corroded break lines. They were brand new, they just had a layer of dust and crud on them from the lane.
however on the other hand where I take my bike has failed it on occasion on something and nowt, then lent me a bench and the tools to sort it there so I don't have to take I t away

you're right had one tell me I hadn't welded the floor properly, it was the wooden floor panel in the back of an fx4 taxi. I asked him if he had ever tried welding wood

When we took my son's series 3 for test, the tester saw there was no belt on the middle seat, then disappeared for a few minutes. When he came back, he apologised for the delay, he was unsure & checked the manual & no it didn't need a belt. He later said he had a feeling we were a VOSA check & had to get it spot on.

Once I'd found someone used to Land Rovers I stick with them, once had to take my Lightweight to a different place and it took ages to convince him it had part time 4 wheel drive and wouldn't climb out of the brake test rollers

Reminds me of the garage I used to use when I lived in the NorthWest, the MOT guy had owned a jeep many years ago, so when I took mine in he used to have fun with the apprentices. Usually offering them the starting handle if they couldn't find the floor starter button, telling them to wave their arms about because it didn't have indicators etc etc
