the trouble is if you took your car to 5 diffrent testers u may get diffrent results from them .getting tests done on wiring by nic eic inspectors once a year is the same ,some will pass things some wont and criticise and pick up on petty things who is right

The tester that's right is the one that does it by the book! No deviation at all from the actual testing rules laid down by VOSA. Certain vehicles are exempt from certain tests ie old cars with cats, seat belts etc but a good tester will know this and again test those vehicles to the VOSA standard.

so that means the guy who failed the seatbelt is correct and any other tester that would pass it is wrong quite personaly i do what i think is right in testing things out in my job and im happy with .other people have diffrent opinions thats there choice .if testers are unsure they say its a grey aeria. in other words its a good get out if its not clear cut

thats fine with a black and white item ie light not working...what about corrosion when does it become excessive?or a non standard exhaust become too noisey? or tinted glass too dark? opinions vary...

Not at all. What I'm saying is if the VOSA standard on seatbelts condition states that it would fail then the guy that failed it is right because he followed the standard. If according to VOSA that belt is advisable but passes then as the others have done in the past it should of passed. I'm not a mot tester but I work to welding inspection standards and it's pass or fail and I work to a standard. I must follow the standard if I'm visually examining welding.

The VOSA now DVSA Testing regs are freely available on line
Many things are easy to interperate
A stop light not working is a easy fail
Some play in a steering joint is up to the testers experience (a worn track rod end wont get any better)
As far as the seat belt is concerned this is what the book says

" cut or damaged sufficient to obstruct correct operation of the belt or significantly weaken the webbing"

The magic word is SIGNIFICANTLY

The manual is way out of date & is going through a major up date

The part of the belt that was posted was a pass & possible advise
I have 3 testers at work & Me
I showed them the picture they all said pass & advise (going by the picture)
The only clear cut pass fails are items missing or not working
You could have a totally corroded & holed front panel on say a Micra it would pass
If it had a sharp edge caused by damage It would fail

motor vechicles are allowed some wear,at what point it becomes unacceptable is difficult...to determine, it will vary from tester to tester,if its borderline then it should be a pass and advise,at least its been noted and been brought to attention

I found it easier to buy a 1950 vehicle. No MOT or RFL

Ooh look at you driving a "modern car" My preferred vehicle is a 1942 Willys MB jeep, having said that I'm glad to see the back of the MOT for pre 1960 cars, it was a waste of time and money. My jeep is so basic the entire MOT would take 10 mins and the tester and me would then chat for the remainder of the time.

The only good bit of the test for me was to check the brake balance, and I still take it to the MOT place for them to check the balance every couple of years.

I check everything else myself multiple times a year when I'm under it giving all the nipples a good greasing, especially the brakes, seeing as it doesn't have dual circuit brakes I like to keep an eye on things for my own peace of mind.

The best brake balance test is a road test
It will pull to one side or the other
It may even try to swap ends

last year I was wondering if I would fail for my seat belt, as its frayed at the edges, but it didnt even get an advisory. I have had the car MOT'd by the same garage for the last 16 years though, so sometimes I think it could help to sometimes find a local garage and stick with them. they don't maintain my cars, just MOT them.

although they did tighten the securing bolt for the seat belt (which would have been a failure) and didnt charge me for it. I did give them some beer money afterwards though as they could have failed it for that and then it would have be the hassle of going for a retest.

Easy with this belt! ....The owner cut the damaged part out then stapled (using normal paper staplles) another piece in ! mmnnn nice work........

The point made by Optima21 is very true if you are known by the garage, get repairs done there and are seen to be a person who likes to keep on-top of maintenance and safety I am sure there is a little more leeway as regards advisory and fail.
If we take corrosion on brake pipes well obviously it don't want to be holed but how much is too much?

Its just not the same is it now? as you are looking at a new weld, have set limits on things like any undercut and reinforcement heights etc. How do you set limits on seat belt wear that you can actually measure? There are a lot of components on a car and a lot of differing engineering on the vehicles themselves (take for instance the old RR foot-wells mentioned)

The advisory would help the tester , at least the defect was noticed & a wrong judgment made

Owners decision to drive it! If it was dangerous it would have failed,any part on any car can fail at any time...
