Modifying a 3D scan.

I have a gear shift trim cover which is just a touch too wide at the 'shoulders' to use. I have scanned it and would like to know if there is a simple method of reducing that measurement down by half an inch or so, leaving everything else as it was?

This is my drawn interpretation of it, not the actual item to give some context of what I am needing to do...

I don't have it to hand, but I will see if I can find it on my NAS. I seem to recall that it was a standard format.

If all else fails, use the scan you have to print out a copy, use a hacksaw, glue gun, filler and sandpaper on the copy to make one the right size and then rescan it.

If it's for 3d printing you can edit the dimensions in the slicer if you can stand a few % squish. Failing that, upload the file and I could chop out a precise section for you.

If you want to modify the model , you need a 3D software .
Google Sketch up is free and able to open and modify 3D parts .
Otherwise you need something like SolidWorks , Inventor , Fusion 360 , ProE , SolidEdge , Rhinoceros , CatiA... . All of them offer a 30 days trial version , SolidWorks and Fusion has a very cheap license available for hobbysts ( you can find links on Titans of CNC website , download menu ) .

I had to do this and it was a nitemare. Not as easy as you would think.

Some of the guys on here know how to do it but it blows your mind when they start mentioning mesh mixer and blender and fusion back then would not do it..

Try Meshmixer. My lad used it successfully to "sculpt" the horse brass model.

It was a Revopoint 3D POP2. If you recall, you also scanned your wife's pussy.

What did you use to scan it?

A couple of good threads here on it. I know @JMS1972 and @ajlelectronics scan using professional kit. Read the Scanning and Metal Melter (mega read) threads and my lad's exploits with free software. Results imo are quite impressive. If course being handy with CAD/arty helps.

My first attempt of a scan from a Revopoint 3D POP2. What a steep learning curve though, I am finding it very unintuitive and the software is not straightforward. First you scan and there is no help to tell you how to set the variables. Then you import that into another equally unfriendly piece...

Metal Melter

Looking at @Kram 's fire clay/element build... Thinking to: 3D print the inner of a mould with a spiral on the outside. Should allow the element to sit perfectly, In segments for easy removal. Then place in a large container and fill the gap with this stuff...

From my limited experience scans are better for using as a reference to remake a model if you need dimensional accuracy.

Depends on the kit used. I watched a programme about the Hornby factory, two guys using handheld devices, scanning a Lamborghini for and upcoming Airfix kit. Accuracy and reproduction was amazing. Went straight to a resin printer from memory.

Oh for sure if you can afford something like an Artec (and the gfx card to run it) and have the skill to use it. But even scanners in the 5k range are hit and miss. Maybe that’s my lack of skill at operating it right enough

Found this ref Airfix but the tech used on the Lambo programme was more modern. Pretty sure it was still Lidar though:
