mk4 astra hot wheel

uncle bought 98 mk4 astra 6wks ago.
drove ok on test run.
it had new pads and discs fitted before he picked itup.
went on run into town had smoke coming from front os wheel and wheel felt hot.
put it down to new pads.
couple of weeks later after lots of stop starting in traffic it wasnt pulling very well pulled into where he was going it felt hot and had melted plastic cover.
about 1/2hr later he drove home and it drove fine.
yesterday went for long run and by end was sluggish again and hub red hot to point he put water on it and it sizzled to use his description.
he jacked it up this morning and said it turned ok no noise and no side to side movement.
also doesnt get hot on short runs.

wants me to help him next weekend.
anyone one any ideas?
is it likely to be hub?

Sticking calliper or a flexy pipe working like a one way valve (it happens)

just rung him he said no judder but yesterday pedal felt very stiff with not a lot of travel.

As mr fluff said, sticker slider pins.. Take the wheel off and strip and clean the pins and the faces the pads slide on, also have a look at the piston for corrosion., won't cost anything and will only take 20min.

+1 for stuck slider pin(s). Even just a wee bit sticky on one pin can cause this. Had exactly the same problem on my Passat when I got it. Stuck slider pin was the cause.

I used to get it in my Nissan, don't use copper crease on the sliders it dries up and made mine worse, that was proper Copaslip as well not cheap stuff. Get some proper brake or rubber grease and do them with that and you can use it on the piston seals as well.

The caliper carrier on these are part of the hub and are often not cleaned on the faces that the pad slide on. Take the disc off and file up the edges that the pad makes contact with and grease with pad grease. Do this as well as cleaning the sliders. This along with the sticking sliders will be the issue. Also I'm a bit concerned how hot the wheel has been. I would be inclined to replace disks and pads again. Check piston rubber has not melted. One easy way to checked brake flexis is to take caliper off, push piston back (undo brake bottle, suck some fluid out if its on max) get somebody to push brake pedal half way and let go. You should see piston come out then back in about 1mm. If the rubber has melted then it won't do this and you will need new caliper.

As Doubleboost said check the flexi hose to the caliper. I had a strange one once on a punto pulling to one side when applying the breaks then the wheel would bind. First thought it was seized caliper but instead it was a pin hole in flexi let water in to steel braid. This then rusted causing restriction of fluid back from caliper.

id go for flexi hose ive had 3 go like that, they seem to collapse internally probably on the bend so when you jack it up it extends and releases the stored pressure fooling you completely because the wheel then spins freely

Good advice, you know if you don't get a new fexi the old one will be seized solid.

Just confirm it is front. Not a 1.8 with rear discs is it?

If it was mine I'd strip both sides to make sure its all been fitted as it should be. You never know unscrupulous sellers could just throw the spares at it? not saying that's been done!

if it was a mechanical problem they usually remain constant, but his drove ok at times after a period of rest

Just says o/s but knowing it does front in his pist somewhere lol. Just don't want it to be as simple as a sticking handbrake lever arm or sticking cables lol
