If you've never had a problem before and the temp gauge has always hovered around the halfway mark I'd say the gauge is fine

ran it up again....seemed fairly normal heater started to work after 5-8 mins , gauge crept up to the middle but the rad hoses stayed cold
took it for a 2mile run to circulate things and this is where it gets wierd , the rad hose on the passenger side was hot , other side near the stat stone cold
header tank and hoses cold ..at that point that rad fan came on and ran until i decided to turn off with the gauge just over half way

Try running it longer if lower rad hose doesn't heat up eventually rad could be blocked

would the fan have cut in with the rad and hoses cold though? im told the fan sensor is in the head so engine is /thinks its hot while the rad isnt..kinda shouts thermostat but it seemed to be working fine

Run it with out the stat. If the same happens after a 10 mile run you have a blockage.

Through the rad? Hot in the top cooler out the bottom.

You dont need to touch the cam belt.the belt covers need to come off. iirc there is a bolt that is abit tricky to get to ai the bottom. As you have no doubt found out its a bit tight between the engine and the inner wheel arch.
once the covers are off then remove the aux belt and the tensioner. your probably better to change them while they are off. the pump should be just about accessible then. the pump is ally and the bolts plated steel so there would have been some galvanic action which holds them in. you just need to crack them off then the pump wiggles out

tried a new stat now...passenger side /top hose is roasting hot and wobbling about ,other side is stone cold
does a blocked rad make any sense?

If top hose is that hot then the bottom hose should be hot so blockage of some description sounds likely remove hoses when cool and try flushing with hose pipe

If it is blocked and has the crimped ends on I've removed the ends cleaned one out and refitted the ends with no.problems they just have a lot of bent over tabs

looks like £30 odd for a new one so if its blocked i wont worry about throwing a new one in

*might* be getting somewhere now
theres a small hose running from the back of the head to the coolant tank , the elbow seemed to be blocked so ive drilled that through and cleared it , now the rad and hoses etc all get hot as you would expect , also ran a hose though the rad
will take it on some local trips to see what happens

Usually lack of changing the coolant over the years
What you mean it isn't good for the entire lifetime of the car ?
I'm shocked I tell you, shocked
Only kidding, but I know people who actually expect coolant, power steering and brake fluid
to never need changing.

right ive driven it around town and down the local bypass at speed , ran for about 1.5 hrs and no signs of boiling up
one random issue though...the temp gauge flicked straight into the red a few times then instantly back to normal , too fast to be a genuine reading so im guessing sender or elec probs maybe as well
