I know I’ve already said so but I’m certainly happy for you Clive.
I don’t know enough about you to even speculate on what motivates you. But if your looking to make a big change, I’d guess that ‘that thing’ that keeps you working 7 days a week will be harder to shift than a 28 foot lathe. Hopefully I’m wrong…

Whatever happens going by what you’re able to produce when it’s making you miserable, I can’t wait to see what you get up to when you’re enjoying yourself!

It’s purely wanting a safe home for the stuff . Essentially the place hasn’t broke even since lockdown so there is no business to close and I’ve had a job for most of the year so it’s not like I’m struggling with the idea of a job , more like I struggle with the concept of getting paid to do nothing some days!

I get you. My point was more about what you’ve said about missing out on family holidays etc. I hadn’t really thought you’d have trouble with the thought of having a job, more the space in between. Seems like you’ve been pushing hard for a long time. Still no mention of you having a rest…

Know where you are I sold up the motor trade side when beloved nearly died with a rare blood disorder, then when she had hart problems, 3 major surgeries in a month I retired.
I have been lucky have never worked (even the 7 day weeks 14+hours a day for years and there was no need) when I did not enjoy the job, beloved holidayed with her sister to see the world.
I get bored if away for more than a day or so, some people love their holidays.
But you have to do what is best for you/and family

you need to learn when things at work are slow….”smile keep taking the money”. Once you master the concept, life isn't too bad. The self employed work hard, for excessive hours doesnt really work in the employed works as it makes the rest look bad.

Look for activities you'll all enjoy and that are different, so your all on unknown turf!

I think you are a bit like me Clive. I have always said a day away from the farm is a day wasted! I struggle with holidays,all that traffic,hours stuck in a car with ratty kids,never sleep right in a strange bed and the wife want's to go in these bloody shops selling useless tat!

It’s sad in so far as its skills going that won’t be replaced.

You really wouldnt like working in todays education system. Utterly risk averse & to teach anything at school or at college you need a teaching qualification.
I worked at Seevic (Now USP College) They do engineering courses but they are a far cry from how you were taught.
When i worked there while the workshop was offline for a year I took the opportunity to strip & clean several machines one a Colchester Bantam, I got it up rall back together & running & it was turning like a good un. A few months later one of the kids asked me "Sir why is my turning looking like this?" The part he was making looked like it had been chewed with a rusty breadknife. I had a look & the lathe top & compound slide were all slack on the gibs plus the topslide screw adjustment had been slacked right off until there was a huge amount of loose backlash. I adjusted the lathe up to how it should be & showed the kid how to make the part, he was amazed how it turned out. It turned out that the Head of dept had forbidden them to use the power feed & slackened everything off to make the machine easier to use? It got so once a week i would set the machine up & the moron would bugger it up.
In the end i had a stand up row with the prat. This is the sort of thing you will get in education prats with no knowledge or pride on 50k a year plus telling skilled technicians on minimum wage & the kids how to do things badly.
I could rant on for a week about that bloke but wont!

Blimey is that how much hard chroming costs these days. Yikes! Having a set of forks done used to be a couple of hundred quid. Mind you I haven’t looked since before ABE caught fire…
