It just looks like a horizontal with a vertical head attatchment to me,a true ''universal'' is not a horizontal with a vertical head, it has a swivelling table as well as the X Y axis for cutting helical gears.Thats a "universal" mill, see the long section slid back on top? that slides forward and that arbour at the end bolts on the front and supports a horizontal arbour. 2 for the price of 1, and you can do a few jobs easier on a horizontal (gear cutting, mass slab milling, hollowing out crankcases etc).
I have no quill on my universal and Ive got on fine without it for years, I use drills in a jacobs chuck arbour, and the only difficulty Ive had is breaking taps power tapping when I bumped the knee control too hard as downfeed, but now I have a bristol tapping head which lets the tap float up and down once its started.
The only other thing that is awkward is you can tilt a quill head and feed at a angle, but you have to use a sine table to hold the workpiece tilted instead to do the same job on a non quill feed equipped head.
Heres my arno, it has bt40 taper head and horizontal arbour, pumped oiling system for all the leadscrews and slides, suds with integral tank etc. Ill be tossing up later between putting the horizontal arbor setup on to make some vee blocks or using the shaper instead

If your picking up that mill, can I come and liberate the press?![]()
I the best thing I can do is go and have a look at some so I can get a feel for what I can fit in ,
Chris
You're welcome to come have a look at my set up if you like
Depending on the work you intend doing, consider a Shaper - Great machines and available at VERY cheap prices
That would be great pal , I'm home now for a while too![]()
More like 'no hands' spares or repair?
Wheres the hand wheels, leadscrew, mountings with bearings and gib strip.
I (and Brightspark!) use a Bridgeport, but the 1ES, not the big one.
The 1ES is primarily a horizontal mill but can be fitted with a vertical head to give added versatility... if I can ever find one- had my 1ES for almost ten years and I can count on the thumbs of one foot how many vertical heads I've seen for sale, so if you go for a 1ES, well don't unless it has the vertical head with it

Like this one on ebay at the moment?

Nothing to do with me by the way, just though it might be helpful

Bit spendy compared to what I paid for mine (albeit a few years ago) but completely sensible against the other one that's listed... for £3900!

Its a true universal. Its hard to see but the x axis swivels on the y axis if you undo four lock bolts clamping the table to the rotating platter underneath.
I've never actually used that facility though yet so not sure i'd miss it to worry about the distinction...
Something like this

Well iv been and bought this one, no play on the table and no marks , there is a couple of accidents on the vice though
, needs a good clean and it should be good to go
Cool, and probably more useable with a bit of previous as it saves you feeling guilty when you make one too. And can get on with making stuff on it instead of worrying about what if I damage the vice a bit
If you are moving it yourself, drain down the coolant, and drop the knee as low as it goes and lock the table for moving. I'd also take the overarm and probably the J head off to reduce weight...
