Milling a shaft.

i ember haveing simalar problems with a kart project, those litel drive sprokets off bikes are hard as hell if the shaft is softer they soon wear the splines off the shaft.

i have various ideas sutablity of massivly depends on the power being handeld. on the kart it ended with the shaft over length and the bearings on the outside so they were easyer to change, the finl way we attched the gears to the shaft will e frowned apon but after trying to do it corectly twice and failing the spokets just got welded on as wanted to test the rest and got inpatient it worked to well to the point it got left

Is it possible to mount a shaft with a horizontal milling cutter on a lathe and mount the piece somehow on the cross slide.

Anything is possible. But why struggle in a lathe when I have a mill. By the time Id mounted the dividing head on the cross slide id end up having to use loads of packing, it would be a right faff on.

Milling on a lathe for yokes and stuff works quite well, but far easier on a mill.

Its a 300 rear tyre, so at a guess 375 max length

Couple more pics, just the final pass to do now.

The saw leaves sharper internal corners than the correct cutter might produce but as the old shaft splines where just as sharp I'm not worrying about that.
