They were called "Cords" rings Bill, and seemed to be quite popular in the 50s and 60s............guess they worked on the low revving long stroke motors around back then.

Is an engineering drawing showing how Cords rings coped with wear ridge at top of cylinders. They were primarily intended for badly worn engines, and avoided the need to a rebore (at least for a while).

Yeah but bike engines and landrovers aren't run of the mill car engines. My cousin is a mechanic, and very rarely opens an engine, the cost of his time quickly adds up and outweighs the cost of buying a replacement engine.
Anytime i have gone to the workshop here that does the rebores and crank regrinds, its rarely an everyday car block or crank you see waiting to be worked on, its all classic stuff, stationery engines, crane engines, things like that.

I would guess it possible to get something like a Pinto short engine exchange, for less than the cost of the parts to rebuild one properly?

Rebuilding and replacing engines isn't cost effective in a 'normal' car but then I'd suggest that lots of stuff done on this forum isn't financially sensible... but its interesting and in lots of cases that's all that matters.
You build your engine and treat it as a learning exercise and have fun when doing it.

If you are seriously interested in rebuilding car engines, I still have some of the tools to do it with, things like plier type piston ring clamps, dead blow hammer for fitting pistons. As I only do bike stuff nowadays, they are on offer (lowish price) if you dont have those things already and they are of any use to you.

Crack on, it's a fun pastime. I've built about 8 so far and all are still running. Ok, two are Honda GX390s, one is a Kubota D950, an L100 Lombardini I think and a Peugeot 2.0 16v for my race car (well, that's not assembled yet but I have check fitted it all at least twice on dummy assemblies)
It's never cheaper to build your own, however you do learn a lot, and I think a keen amateur will often do a better job than many paid mechanics will, purely because they don't get the time to do everything just so. And believe me, building an engine properly takes a lot of hours.

I will say it's a steep learning curve though and mistakes can be expensive. Read up on the subject and scour the auction sites for the tools you'll need as gearing up can cost a fair whack, which you'll only justify if you build more than one engine in your time.

Oh yes, there is nothing like seeing your newly re built engine spew its guts out when you turn the key :-)

If no previous experience, take things very slowly and make sure the right tools are to hand before starting. Also very important is finding a good engineering shop if things like rebores or crank grinds are required..................some shops arent that great, and will charge high prices for poor work.
Example of engineering work close to me is one person charging £60 for boring bike cylinder and taking 2 weeks to do it, and someone else charging £30 and ready next day.
On any older engine being rebuilt its worth having crank crack tested and polished, and rods checked for straightness, but again you need to find a good engineering shop to do this work properly.

Not saying this is the case but to be fair, the guy charging more might do a better job and have a long queue of clients waiting instead of the cheaper guy who strangely could fit you in right away. Ask around, go with trusted reccomendations and beware too good to be true prices.

Expensive engineering guy I mentioned, screwed up a job on rare old car engine, belonging to another forum member, so high cost and long lead times dont always mean a better job!

They don't always mean a bad one either, I had a cylinder head prepared by Guy Croft Racing Engines, it wasn't by any definition of the word cheap, it wasn't fast either, but I wasn't in a hurry and I told him so. Regardless, he has a backlog of work because he's a proven engine builder with a long list of clients and jobs. The work he did do was flawless, clean, pressure test, head skim, equalise chamber volume, ported inlet and exhaust, design manufacture and fit new bulletised valve guides, 3 angle valve and valve seat grind, shim solid lifters, time up cams. He picked up the fact I'd been given duff cam timings by my supplier that would've certainly destroyed my engine the first time it got revved hard. So was he cheap? No, was he fast, no. Was he excellent value for money? Most assuredly yes, although I wouldn't take my lawnmower engine to him to work on, some jobs just don't require that level of finesse. But thanks for confirming my point, look past just the price and go with somebody you know to be good from good trusted advice from previous customers (who know what they are talking about and aren't happy with any old service) they may well be more to it than the story told by price alone.
