Anyone i know with a knackered engine, heads to the scrap yard and see if they can get something useable.

I havnt read all this and correct me if someone has mentioned it but:-
To measure a bore correctly, A bore gauge is the best which is a three legged affair so that the measuring bit is always square to the circumference.
I have heard of people reringing pistons and putting them back into worn bores in an attempt to coax a bit longer out of an old engine, the top ring then smashes off the ridge and the whole thing is scrap.
