To be honest, i thought the days of working on engines was gone, unless the engine was something expensive, rare or for competition. Anyone i know with a knackered engine, heads to the scrap yard and see if they can get something useable.

To measure a bore correctly, A bore gauge is the best which is a three legged affair so that the measuring bit is always square to the circumference.

True, but it can get real expensive really quick, pistons, rings, shells, gaskets, boring and honing, crank regrinds etc. looking back at the original poster saying what the engine was, its a 1.8 pinto, i got it in my head it was a focus engine.

One of the best and only ways in my mind to figure out everything about an engine is to rebuild one. I have done several over my time, so for me hats off to the OP.

As well as the bores check the crankshaft check for oval'ity, is that a word? end float etc. Check the cam shaft for un-even wear on the lobes.

Be mindful of costs, if the engine cost very little then you can have time and a bit of money to get running, but it could be quite difficult to get the gear you need for it without it costing well over the odds, a quick ebay search found bvery little for the 1.8, lots more for the 2.0.

Bore gauge is the fastest and easiest way to measure cylinder wear, but as a complete rebuild on a Pinto if done properly is going to cost maybe £600, best to look for good used one unless money not a problem.

Its a 'side' project sonething to train or lewrn on before i start rebuilding my mercedes engine for 1983 mercedes w123 230ce 2 doors but i was thinking i could put the engine in ford popular 100e and im aware that the cost of the rebuild may exceed the value of the engine in this case im nit gonna do it but looking at the ebay those engines are expensive thanks for all the coments so far

In the days when we had a shop locally specialising in machining engines and skimming breaks - long gone now!
Lips in the bore meant a re- bore didn't even bother with the measure but as said sometimes they run fine - don't fix nothing that ain't broke
Seriously if it's a practice for the merc - why? Have you got the machines to rebuild a merc engine? Just send the thing off as one and concentrate on all the other bits

A telescopic gauge will always find the exact minimum distance between two sides of a cylinder bore. As you pull it out and tip it, the gauge will slide to the diametrically opposite points and be compressed to the exact width at that point. So long as it locks under friction, you can then transfer that "measurement" to a micrometer. Bore gauge micrometers are more cumbersome and require adapters to give you the required range which often introduce errors. Still worth double checking the bore mic against an external imho.

I wanted to use the engine it was only £40 complete engine apart from distributor and carbs it did not break the bank and on the other hand i want to know how to repair it it very easy to send things off or give it to some other people to repair but there is no satisfaction in it

Point of a bore gauge is to measure wear in the cylinder not the diameter. For this they are perfect, and you can see the amount of taper as the gauge is moved down the bore.

Yes I have a bore gauge, but its really only something a pro would need. Measuring difference in ring gap will tell you whether rebore is needed or not.

A rule of thumb is if you can feel any sort of wear ridge top of cylinder, its going to have at least 7-8 thou wear and will need to be bored. As soon as you get into boring cylinders everything gets expensive pretty quickly, and finding a good used engine is in most cases a better idea.

I have heard of people reringing pistons and putting them back into worn bores in an attempt to coax a bit longer out of an old engine, the top ring then smashes off the ridge and the whole thing is scrap.

You could sometimes get rings with a step in to avoid this ridge. Otherwise it has to be removed.
