]I think you've all misunderstood my intent. This is not for cooking, but so that I can weld inside the shed if need be. Big trough with grille to use as a platform, allowing hot metal to be caught before it reaches the floor.....

But, where do you guys get the metal grating you use on things like plasma tables etc?

I use Flowforge on my cutting table, do you have any fabricators locally, they often have off cuts its the type of thing normally used as tread plates in outside stairs and fire escapes.

That fake grill 'lava rock's is good for welding on top of.

All the irregular surfaces seem to stop weld splashes bouncing around. Also good for grinding over as seems to stop/trap the sparks/dust pretty well.

You could use a shallow tray of that stuff and wrap some heavy duty wire fence mesh or light weldmesh over the top of it.

Ps. Try looking at weldmesh.
Last time I had to make some big steel grills for something i think it was cheaper to buy 6mm weld mesh than 1/2 as much in length of 6mm round bar.
A lot simpler to cut and fit than loads of individually spaced bars.
Spacing is too big on it for burgers though.
