Many moons ago I worked security on motorway works compounds. And the one truly terrifying sight was to see the gypsies pull up in a few tippers at 2am.
We were told to call the police, and lock ourselves in the cabin until they left. It apparently was a weekly occurance.
When they rolled in on my shift at some unearthly hour of the morning and just started rolling out the full propane cylinders and lamps along with a bomag road roller, I rang the police and went out and said to them "what the f*ck do you think your doing?" carrying my trusty cut length of scaff tube and having every intention of using it extensively being a bit of a lad for that when I was young and stupid, figuring by the time it got really nasty plod would make a entrance. To my surprise they jumped in the pickup and left without anything. Surprise because of all the tales about how they never backed off ...
The police turned up 4 hours later and their attitude was "we'll just file a report for the insurance". I got it out of them that they got the call in time to attend but let it drag out a bit to give the gypsies time to disperse so there wasnt any trouble, after all we all knew the mo, hide in office while they stripped everything...
Now, I dont risk my neck for someone else for a pittance nowadays but I still hate pikeys, thieving scum.
We've had them on land too, we dug a trench round the entrance at night so they couldnt get out to rob during the day, and the day after they all left voluntary when we filled it in for them to bugger off.
Theyre not even proper gypsies, theyre tinkers and thieves, the proper gypsies hate them as much as we do. Get bloody spanish ones here in france...
I did security on a house in anfield in liverpool once, the firm had been contracted because the owner had gone away for work and the local scallies had taken *EVERYTHING*, down to the wiring out the walls, pipework, bathroom suite the lot. The insurance company had paid to refit it, and the contractors left on a friday getting near having the house ready for new furnishings, and they came in monday to find it empty again.
That was 19 years ago, not a new phenomena

They did that to a neighbour's house and even changed the locks so he couldn't get in!
It suprises me how easily they back down, I caught one rummaging through my yard and gave him a right mouthful while his mates watched from the gate. He eventually apologised and away they went - amazing.

Touch wood, i'm constantly and pleasantly surprised at how pikey-free and generally thieving scum free this part of Scotland is. There's a field on the shore near where the boat is called Gypsy Brae, where our local "caravan club" ha ha, turn up and leave their periodic quota of LPG cylinders; and everyone battens down the hatches for a bit, but it's nothing like down south.
It's probably cos there's so little industry now and so few gardens/yards/sheds to rob, it's not worth their while being here.
The story of rummagers in the back yard was familiar to me. Even having arguments with the scrounging sods about whether I really needed whatever piece of scrap they had their eye on! The fact that I caught the bloke in question letting himself in seemed irrelevant.
We recently had some tinker kids trying to sneak into the yard. I made them get out the way they'd come - through the coiled barb wire. They said "we only wanted to look at the boats" (aye, right), so I suggested the right way about it would be to come to the gate and ask. So they did, and I told 'em no. Then they chucked rocks at me, bless 'em, and I threatened to chuck them in the harbour, so they ran off. Oh, the banter.
I saw the same kids demolishing a load of cones at some road works later the same day.
I hope their parents are proud of their model children!

Exactly - If it wasn't so serious it would be a joke.
One of my custormers used to make trinkets to sell to Gypsies and one day 3 or 4 came in to buy some stuff and after they'd gone he noticed his shelf full of post ready to go that evening had been cleared!
We don`t have Chavs in Scotland............they are called Neds. Their children are born with pierced ears. Anyway two of them were in front of me in the bank. Teller asks one for ID. He looks puzzled and then shows her his.......IDENTITY BRACELET!!. "That`s not ID" she says. " Whit ur ye tryin eh say? Thit it`s no real gold" shouts "The Ned ".
Having fished and camped all over Scotland there`s only one cure for midgies.......a great big fire with heat and smoke aplenty. I put up a tarp to trap the smoke........they don`t come in and you are comfy below the ceiling of smoke.........with a whisky and beer of course.

it might have been handy to have one of those aboard today, when I got caught in a holdup on the M62 after a wagon had crossed over to the opposite carriageway and overturned.
After an hour and a half at a standstill, the traffic started edging forward again but as it passed under a bridge a group of brainless gits standing on the bridge were dropping debris onto vehicles as they passed slowly underneath. When they decided to single my car for this treatment, I stopped and took a few pictures of them, which they didn't seem too fond of as they cleared off fairly rapidly.
Mind you, I'd still rather have pointed a pair of barrels at them than a camera lens...
