Mellor lathe pulley and back gears

Hi guys.
Been doing my Mellor lathe strip down and rebuild. Am a little confused about the spindle pulley oiler. Now in the picture below you will see the pulley with the oil hole. But the hole does not protrude down on to the spindle. You can see an oil gallery in side but it will not get any oil from the oil hole.

I had the exact same issue on a machine I sold, big fat bronze bushes blocking the oil hole, seems pointless as you say. I'd be interested to know what it's meant for.

In the end I sold the machine. Little key cutter it was, had been left outside for some time then 'restored' with a bath of green paint. Too hard for me, sold it for a profit though!

Does the oil groove line up with the hole? Or maybe it has had a replacement bush fitted incorrectly, My first thoughts were, that there could be a grub screw in the hole to prevent any debris entering, but if you can see the bush that is not the case,

Could it possibly be the bushes are new and supplied without a hole. When you fit them you then drill a hole, saves having to try and press them in at the correct alignment.

Are they sintered bushes, oil just soakes through them?

It may of well had a replacement bush but they forgot to drill oil hole. It definitely needs a oil supply as when I removed the shaft you could see there has been no oil supply

Yes. All the oil will work it's way outside defeeting the object of an oil supply

Have drilled a hole. Fitted new grub screw. Should get a supply of oil now.

Can't think of a worse place to have an oil hole, right under the flat belt. I wonder if some silly sod stamped that there for a joke? Seems more likely that the hole was for a screw to secure the bronze hub to the iron pulley.

Yer it's a strange set up. I can't really understand it. But there is no other means to get oil in to it.

Total deviation, but just noting the tap handle you used. What are they like to use compared to the standard type? Never tried the T type myself.

I get on ok with them .especially for small stuff..the T handles came with some sets I have. Been very useful . I have some ratchet handles to but never used em yet.

Those 'T' handle wrenches can be quite useful, What some folks don't know is that there are two different size squares inside to take two sizes of tap.

Might get a set of those ordered then. Noticed John using one in his last nightcap too, so had been looking at some on Ebay. Was undecided whether to try them or not though.

I have a few. one is a reversible ratchet one bought it from a tool shop in Germany 40 years ago
