You can perhaps use an inverter to give you 3 phase, cost about £100 for a new ebay special or keep your eye out for decent secondhand ones (Mitsubishi, telemecanique etc). I had some larger ones for sale but they are both taken. A bonus is you get speed control with this.
You "can" get a motor to run by connecting a capacitor across 1 phase but I've no experience of this - it works but not at full torque apparently.

Motor can be used if rewired to delta configuration and used with a 240v single-phase-input to 240v three-phase-output inverter. Some inverters are described by wattage instead of horse power: 1 hp is 750 W so a 1/2 hp or 400W inverter will do. Available from £30 upwards off ebay.
Please post a clear photo of the motor information plate and one of the inside of the connection box (remove the cover plate). We need to determine if there are three wires from the motor coils or six wires. Six wires is easy. Three wires will require digging around inside the motor to find the star point and converting to six wire. It's not difficult especially on the brand of motor I've seen fitted to Meddings drills. I've just done the same to my own. If you are stuck, I could do yours for you.

I was going to buy it but when he decided to put up all the extra information which I'd asked about I said no thanks, that'll just put the price up now.
Adding the £50 postage and the possible dead motor made it too much of a risk when decent ones are had for under £200.

You should be looking for a VFD not an inverter. The inverter is part of the VFD. (Variable Frequency Drive)
There is a seller on ebay, which is where I got mine, who supplies from Germany via UPS for just under £80 for a 1.5KW one. But these are for 220/240V 3PH motors not 380/440V ones. if the plate doesnt have the dual voltage listed then its probably isnt configurable, but if you look in the connector box if the 6 wires are on posts and can be moved its possible to get it into delta (its in star at the moment).
it sounds like you have 4 posts. one for each phase and a neutral. each phase will have one end of a coil attached and the neutral the 3 ends all on the same post. to make it delta you need the 3 ends on a different phase post to the other ends
there is usually a diagram on the underside of the cover.
the alternative is 6 posts and brass strips, whisch is easier to change.
If the 3 neutral connections are fixed and its a 400V motor then a cheap VFD is not going to work from 230V mains unfortunately.

If it's a 3 phase motor it almost certainly won't be a neutral connection, unless there is some circuitry for a brake or suchlike. (Unlikely).

As long as the frame size and mounting are similar I can't see why not. A lot of the old drills seemed to come with varying sizes of motor depending on when they were built and the options when bought, all on the same body.
Ok the Thompson Houston motor is fitted but it runs backwards

The chuck is on a taper. DO NOT try and tap it off, as this is liable to to bend the quill shaft. I have two of these and the early one dates from 1960. Meddings do not supply new quills for the old ones. Two levers equally applied on oposite side should get it off. I fitted a Metabo-Futuro keyless chuck about 20yrs ago, never regretted it. The other drill is a bit newer and little used, so the original keyed chuck is fine.
