...how can I tell the age of my drill

Get the serial number from the plate on the side of the drill and phone Meddings. They should be able to give you the age of the drill and the name of the original purchaser from the serial number.

tried levering but it must be stuck fast , was it a 20mm keyless you fitted
and my next question how can I tell the age of my drill

Knowing the problem about bending the quill and trying levering without success, I cut it off by slicing bits until I was close enough to the taper for the heat to shift it. The new chuck was a 16mm. 20 is a bit big for the drill.
On age, I talked to Meddings about a new quill and gave them the Sr. No. of the drill. They keep records and said July 1960.

If you find yourself faced with a similar problem in the future get yourself a pair of Drill Chuck Removal Wedges.

The tool consists of two identical steel parts (each about 35mm x 45mm); shaped like the letter 'U' with a flat base, they have two arms, designed to go either side of the spindle and in between the chuck and the spindle. They are both tapered increasing in thickness, going from the open end to the closed end, so that when each closed end is tapped towards the other, the force will eject the chuck from the spindle.

Place the chuck removal wedges between the back of the chuck and the spindle and opposite each other.
Gently tap the opposing ends together until the chuck comes off the spindle.

You used to be able to get them from good tool shops and industrial suppliers, at least when we had industries you could. The pair I had were made by Jacobs and at the time cost a couple of quid.

ebay have the wedges strangely priced at £997 and some at £9.96 two sizes j1 /j2 but no measurements I will find the serial no and phone meddings tomorrow and ask about age and removal
