I have had this 2009 model for a few months. It was at 28k miles in July and Im upto 32k, so its due some servicing.

Tyres - 3 done except I have a spare on the 4th due to slow puncture.
Oil /filter
Drive belt - looks like a pain to do!
Headlights to be polished up.
Coolant looks low and I was going to top up, not sure which. The current stuff is a blue colour.

Brake discs are reportedly very pitted from sitting unused for so long. One of the brakes has started to squeak once a revolution when not applied and is getting annoying.

Two from the day I bought it. The seats etc... Were like new! I really need to get it cleaned as I've got wood chips and dust all over it.



I am struggling to find which oil filter fits it. Amazon suggests a few but none are brands I have heard of. Theres a Champion listed but out of stock.

champion filters along with there other stuff is Chinese......only buy euro brands.....except s/plugs then always Japanese NGK....
go find a decent independant parts store or unless u have a Halfords trade card for ur wants.....
dont think any modern car has an easy to do timing belt......I'd be changing it due to it's age......see if there's a specialist independant close by for fitting the belt kit...see what make they fit........
I only ever fit GATES belts....if my clients refuse to put the full kit in and any other make of belt get told to take a hike....there web site will tell u if it's best to fit a water pump and rollers at the same time.....
my T4 gets the full set every time.....
dont go cheap for parts........

I had a 2004 model as a company car - ran it for about 120,000 miles before it went back. Didn’t have many issues - aircon needed regassing and there was a pretty horrible noise from the clutch for the last 12 months or so but I never bothered getting it looked at. It never let me down.

Good car, spacious and comfy and pretty well equipped for the year compared to what was on offer from ford/vauxhall etc at the time

No thanks Id rather buy Chinese than Euro or English rubbish its all made in China anyway tho if the Germans insist on doing final assembly, its chinese materials.

Timing is chain I believe and I am hoping it will last a long time before that needs to be touched.

Halford/ECP dont list the oil filter. Be nice if there was a standard part number rather than every manuf and motor factor having their own

Wont be buying Bosch rubbish also reviews say wrong size. Whats best of these?

My choice would be the Mahle one - all I ever used in a succession of BMWs.

I like the Autodoc website because they normally list part numbers and OEM part numbers on their parts. It makes it a little easier to find parts in the UK.

Just be aware that Autodoc is not in the UK and delivery can be slow/returns a pita.

If you can wait for parts you could consider them, if not, just use their website to find part numbers.

I remember in the 90s my mate had a Ford Probe 16 valve. Mechanically the same as the then Mazda 6. It was cheaper for him to buy spares from Mazda than Ford.

Back then it depended whether you had the 2.2 or 3 litre engine. The gearboxes were Mazda though.

My mates had one of them for the last 6+ ? years, he loves it.

I've worked for a mazda dealer as a technician several times and realy rate them as long as they are genuine mazdas not rebadged fords.First started in about 1989 just as the mx5 was released, last time I left must have been 20 years ago. I had a 89 323 which I bought second hand as a trade in and used for about 15 years before scrapping, also had a later 323 but didn't get as long out of that one. Im would get another but as far as I know they don't have anything the size I want so now have a suzuki swift.
It should last you ages with only minimal work needed.

Ordered the Mahle, hopefully attempt it tomorrow. This has the annoying undertrays and a cutout for the drain plug/filter. Not sure if I will attempt with the tray in place. Could be messy if it spills..!

Gates is now chinesium i believe a lot of people are now recommending Dayco belts

Yes that was the “Sigma” engine, a collaboration between Ford, Yamaha and Mazda. The 1.6 EcoBoost is actually a late derivative of it, but the original 1.7 version used in the Ford Puma is probably the most famous. Volvo used the 1.6 engine under Ford’s ownership as well. It’s a great family of engines.

The 2.3 turbo in my Focus RS is Mazda derived actually, and a lower powered version is still used in the Mustang so the connection lives on!

Slightly off topic, my mums car, 2017 Kia Picanto, hasnt been used much over last weeks and now has a flat battery again! Possibly due replacement.
Last time few months ago I wanted to get battery out and do a proper charge and discharge test. The positive terminal would not pull off the post, the clamp can be loosened butI think the post is deformed.

Couldnt find jump leads, brother has em So I had to charge it in situ with my lipo charger powered from my car.


So now I need to get battery out to do it properly. I am thinking to use a bearing puller to pull the loosened clamp off the post. Any ideas?
