Massey F' 6150, won't reverse? Help!

Yep, Miss Massey Ferguson, no longer will go into reverse.

I have buzzer or beeping noise, can't remember, that unhappy noise.

Green forward arrow and red backwards arrows flashing, handle selector does nothing.

Blown fuse? Electric actuator on the gearbox?

Local ex garageist checked some wires going to the gearbox. I assume?

Really don't do tractors.

Any advice appreciated, before dealership call out bill.

Has to work Friday, so my worst case scenario, is hire / borrow a Manitou, better case is tractor repair man, fixed it.

Anything obvious I can check.

A few things really, the forward reverse shuttle switch/ lever only operates two solenoid valves on the side of the gearbox just about under where the throttle pedal is ( just below the transmission control unit ). First job would be to swap these solenoids over and see if you end up with no forward instead (two minute job). Moving on if that's not the issue, while you are that side of the machine drop the plate down on the underside of the floor and remove the plug on the tcu and give it a good clean, reassemble and try again. Getting a bit mechanical next up is a small adjusting screw that needs a tweek from time to time, this lives between the solenoids and if its out of whack will not sense the box is in neutral so wont allow the box to engage the forward to reverse. If its that screw the reverse will engage but in a default mode after a few minutes by leaving it running with your foot on the brake with the clutch depressed and reverse selected the light will start to alternate/flash between the red and green light. Reverse will then work but it will still want adjusting at some point as this will be a pain.

Its a transmission control unit but often referred to as an ecu, it only controls the gearbox functions like road speed vs dynashift gear selection and things like soft start on the PTO.

It all a bit exposed under there, although under a plate it still gets rooster sprayed by the front wheels. It should have gone in the cab really, never understood the thinking behind leaving urlektroniks exposed like that.

They seem to get good reviews, Perkins turbo diesel, it got less than 6000 hours on it and is in pretty good nick.

Just won't go backwards, obviously.

Depends on whether its had a hard life or not, ours are flat out powering forestry mulchers so they tend to strip pto centres out of the damper hubs at the flywheel end, also spend a lot of time on the clutch so they tend to get cooked. Not complicated or expensive for the bits which is why I run them.

We get them rebuilt with uprated springs for about £150

The wet clutch`s are also simple, cheap and easy to repair.

where I used to live, electronic tractors of all makes got cured by FIRE...!!!!!
then a claim on insurance....
Bought my 399 specifically cos here was no electronics.....
Same tractor, later model even working is worth a tenth of the value....

The only thing we did different yesterday, was he showed me how to raise the seat, which has never been done since we had it.

Is it possible this was the problem?

This morning it works fine.

If I lift my harris off the seat it won't go into reverse, if I'm in forward.

And flashes and beeps.

Stuck switch under seat?

Or total twaddle ?

As on the other thread, look for a sensor somewhere on end of gearstick under cab

Normally a seat switch is just a starter inhibitor, none of mine have got one.

Hmm, curious.

If I stand on the clutch, and stand up, I can't go from forward to backwards and vice versa.

And this morning, all good.

I've located the forward / backward actuators. Checked connections....

Been for an hours drive in it.

One moment, the gearbox wouldn't move right to left.

After some gentle forcing it resumed its normal thing.

It hasn't been used in months, maybe 6?

I read in the manual, you don't use the dynashift for slowing.

So 1,2,3,4, a,b,c,d, and then when I get to a junction, I hit, the clutch and brake, drop back to a, and work my way back up through the gears.

Is d,c,b,a bad, not for breaking, but slowing down.?
