Making a new top slide

The central post with the 4 way is huge.

Does it look like the one in this manual?

That shows two style of top slide, one slotted and one solid. Neither have integral fixing stud.

It also shows the four-way indexing toolpost, and has two part numbers, one to suit the slotted slide and one to suit the solid slide (so there is not a third type of slide to be used specifically with this post).

Hence, going by the manual there, you may be misinformed about the inseparability of the parts.

Looking at that manual I'd suggest you probably need to make or buy part 69522-0 (and 69540-0) from page A13 and then remove the entirety of the 4-post assembly.

That is the Triumph 2000. Mine is the older roundhead.
Been a while since I took it apart. Perhaps I missed something but it looked one piece at the time. Will try again.

Might it be feasible to bore out a dickson type post (or make your own) to fit that slide rather than make a brand new slide?

Picture of it on page 28. So, yes, for that generation of machine, the four way machine did have a special top slide.

Measure it up and see what size lump of iron would be needed to replace it.

The post is so big there would not be much left of the Dictionary!
I think I will go ahead and make one.

I’d make a pattern and cast one out of a nickel cast iron
Steel would work as it’s running on cast iron but cast iron if planed or shaped can produce a good bearing surface without scraping

Well mine is just a bolt, or long stud like the one in the pic. @fizzy I would just look if you can cut that lug off and drill, tap and if needed bore a locating recess into your slide. This would be a lot easier, and if you need to use the four way in the future you still can.

Does anyone have an idea what angle dovetail cutter I need?

You would have to measure it. You might be able to do this by driving the slide forward until it overhangs its lower dovetail and then making a grubby finger on a piece of paper brass rubbing that you can then confirm using a protractor.

Dovetail cutters are expensive and fragile, so try to remove the bulk of the material using other means first (T-slot or Woodruffe cutter, end mill with stock held at correct angle, slitting saw on stub arbor).

I have just realised that "This old Tony" has *exactly* that same style of top slide on his Colchester

Now I can't tell if he's swapping out the top slide or what but he has a Dickson type fitted otherwise.

You could try commenting on one of his videos and asking.

Wow well spotted. Someone else mentioned this a while ago on YouTube but couldn't find the video.Apparently its an Italian toolpost but never seen one so I suspect they are rather rare.
He has a video showing how he makes toolholders but never seen this video before.

Honestly, utterly a coincidence that I happened to watch that video today and went "huh, that looks just the same as the one in that post the other day"
