Chap who worked for me got an engineering apprenticeship at a local firm. They do a lot of press work for the car industry. He was raving about my mag drill. They had never used them before
They bought a few EVOs off Machine Mart. Far too much runout. They borrowed my Rotobroach. Took the EVOs back and bought a load of decent ones instead

ive been watching videos of various brands and you can see the runout on some evos even on video...it does definintely look like you get what you pay for with these...i dont mind cheap hand drills cos i am usually the limiting factor regarding accuracy, and my pillar drill was cheap but only becasue i knew i could give it a once over and tighten bits up and get it running well...but the cheap mag drills look sketchy a lot of the time

Keep the gib screws nipped up fairly tight, makes a big difference on the cutters not wandering

A good deep centre punch mark for the pin is the key to using a mag, keeps the cutter on track on start up.

I've just finally understood what you wrote during a reread. I originally thought a pilot hole was required but it's not? The pin travels up as the cutter comes down and I should have used the shorter pin that sat level with the teeth on the cutter if I understand correctly?

I don't mind making some sort of stand for it so it is effectively a portable pillar drill, while still being able to flick the magnet off and release the stand to then use as intended. My pillar drill is too big for being thrown about though.

In fact, a lot of the box section holes I drill could be done that way and be quicker than setting the drill up for every hole.

No you definitely dont need a pilot hole. I only use a centre punch to line it up accurately. That pin is actually the slug ejector. When I use annular cutters on my Bridgeport I dont have the pin in place at all.

correct, the pin needs to be protuding just past the cutter to enable it to sit in the punch dimple..nice deep punch mark you need get the pin sitting in the dimple then turn the magnet on.

I didn't realise the centre pins were spring loaded either, not sure what I thought happened but something along the lines of taking the pin out before lowering the cutter...makes sense they are spring loaded though

I don't have springs, but the pins weren't new when I got them. Maybe the springs were discarded prior? The head ends are a little battered so someone has been giving them love taps to release instead.

The spring is at the top of arbour inside and pushes the top of pin..its what punches the cut blank out when the cutter is through

I should really RTFM.

Thought it sounded like a chew removing the cutter each time to clear the blanks.

I am especially dense this morning.
