I always used soluble cutting fluid with mine. Be different if using it for steel erecting etc in awkward places though. I find mine pretty noisy so wear earplugs.

Last steel job I was on that needed modifying they had a big mag drill and a Genny stick welder on site that was being used to alter flanges or re-drill holes that didn't line up. Was a nightmare of a job but quite cool watching them drill the holes from underneath the beams

The mag drills that are made to run with a chuck stand a lot taller and have a lot of travel, the smaller ones can take a chuck with an adaptor but thats all taking up space and compromises drill bit choice, save all your broken drills

The most common sizes seem to be the left hand one...they appear to come with a chuck but it looks tiny...the ones I've seen look like they have a morse tape shank with a chuck and then another for the annular cutters. Realistically 12mm would be the smallest holes I would likely drill, and I've seen 12mm x 50mm long annular cutters available, and 50mm would be my deepest hole without wanting to flip it over and drill from both sides.The mag drills that are made to run with a chuck stand a lot taller and have a lot of travel, the smaller ones can take a chuck with an adaptor but thats all taking up space and compromises drill bit choice, save all your broken drills

Thinking about it, I doubt I would use a chuck all that often, and would be for sub 10mm holes so shorter bits anyway and I'm not afraid to cut a bit down or use a spotting drill

Avoid the ones with the head sliding on two chrome bars, they are junk.
Rotabroach style dovetail with bronze keepers is the best.
Rotabroach Panther we used to have till the magnet failed. Now I've got an Alfra. Very very well made.
Fein also make some lovely ones. BDS make some very big heavy duty machines too.
I'd stick to German made or Rotabroach brand.

Think it will be the rotabroach commando I go for, 32mm bore size at 50mm depth seems plenty for my needs, any bigger and odd probably plasma cut it anyway

Yes they do - another British company. But rather a premium price. They claim the lightest with auto downfeed so probably very useful in certain situations.
You are right - website I read was wrong - Yank then acquired by Fein.
Good reason to buy Rotobroach then - British and a LOT cheaper

That one on right with a chuck is on mt2, other thing with that one is it can take a fair size Starrett hole saw and its got a variable speed adjuster on the motor.
