Lpg chip fryer

Has anyone worked on or made an lpg chip fryer?

My sister wants to do a food van and the chip fryers are expensive even second hand

How feasible is it to make one?
Was thinking getting some stainless bent up and then weld a drain tap in with a shelf for a gas burner underneath

I know from experience the shop brought ones have long burners as opposed to hob style round ones

Makes no difference with the type of burner. I have one like the second picture. It’s way way way too big for a chip fryer. Something half that size will be good enough

The branded ones have a diffuser over the flame so the heat is nice and even

What about temp control [she doesn't want a fire due to taking her eye off it/being distracted ] - would you build in a thermostat somehow?

That’s not the one. In the kitchen it’s similar in style but smaller burner. Even then it’s too powerful

I would have thought a LPG chip fryer is a recipe for disaster, with no thermostatic control.

Do they exist comercially ?

They do exist but something like a lyncat is still £500 second hand

Yes as I won’t buy Chinese tat I’d rather build something that lasts or bite the bullit and help her get a proper one

A normal burner has a rotary dial to turn it up and down

I could attach a temp probe to it and work from there

Ideally it needs a thermostatic control and a high limit cut off in the event of failure of said Stat.

Lpg and mobile catering is a specialist subject all by itself

Its something I try and avoid, but as @Parm says, you need a much smaller burner than you think you do

guessing will need to run a generator anyway (most do) so why not just go with a bit bigger generator and run electric chip pan?

one of the local burger vans here does and it works well

their generator isn't that big, woman who works there picks it up and moves it about no problem

I think they plan when to run stuff, so don't run the chip pan, kettle, microwave and electric grill all at the same time but haven't really paid much attention


electric is much easier, less maintenance, more reliable etc. etc.

I’m not a fan of electric as there’s less control over heat

It is an option but looking at self sufficient gas first as a generator drives you nuts humming away all day

After years of racing paddocks I’d be keen not to have one buzzing away all day

I worked full time as a chef but couldn’t do it past 6 months as the money for some one else was so bad £15k pay cut
