Not under insulation is it? That can drastically affect the current carrying capacity of the cable.

Some is, some isnt. I suspect someone laid the insulation after the electricians had finished wedging wires tight into back boxes! When I have more time i will expose it.

Its thick cable - will onlu just fit in the switch connectors really. Just measured and its 7 strands of copper just over 1mm diameter. Cables about 6mm diameter with the insulation and 5mm diameter with the strands twisted without insulation.

Cable only has to be covered over 500mm to warrant derating the current carrying capacity by half.

Thanks folks. Appreciate all the advice to make it better and safer. Once i started properly undoing the old bits, the live supply wasnt particulalry tight either.

the art of doing them safely and tight is having the cables been able to move up and down in the box and coming inline with the terminals so your not forcing the wires back in the box buckling up . with a bit of patience there ok

....all the while working over your head....I've very few boxes overhead, and don't want any more.

good job u havent my job then been replacing hundreds of light fittings in offices and a school and loads more in peoples houses for the last 55 years

Or just use some more wire.
wire it hanging down, stuff the 4' of excess up in the ceiling when done, screw box to ceiling.
easy peasy......
