Toyota, I have had a corrola for 5 years said to be boring but goes well if you boot it hard! It does the job, Honda ultra reliable, Skoda good too. Do not buy a French car at any price, As for Volvos, there are excellent cars but when they go wrong which unfortunately they sometimes do they are eyewateringly expensive to fix!

Assuming you left at 8am on Wednesday and arrived Friday lunchtime at midday, without any stops at all that's an average speed of 211 mph, impressed!

Anything VAG group with either the 1.9pd or 2.0tdi engines and a manual gearbox.
The 1.9 has been around since the dawn of time and is good for many hundreds of thousands of miles. Just keep the oil changed regularly. The 2.0 is similar.
Stay away from the auto boxes of the era though, nasty old ZF 5 speed units mostly that need servicing too often, mostly ending up in a rebuild.
If money is tight, Skoda Superb or Octavia would be obvious candidates. The Skoda badge still holds prices back.

No it wouldn't. OP says 500 mile round trip, so 250 each way. Unless he's charging at each end, and stopping in Birmingham for a full charge, 125 mile range won't cut it. Do the maths, if you can.

Sorry my mistake, you're absolutely right, 125 mile range is perfectly adequate for a 50 mile commute as you say. Rob didn't ask about a 50 mile commute though, go back and read the OP properly before making irrelevant comments, please.

Well I just drove the XC70 200 miles up t'north. Took it very easy...65/70...there must have been a tail wind because she is averaging 29 mpg

I test drove the MG ZS...that has great range. Although cranking up the heating and the heated seats knocked 60 miles off the range on my test drive. I would have bought it...but the passenger seat it turns out isn't height adjustable...so every time the missus drives I'd have my head touching the roof!!
Stopping all hemis if rumours are true.
However, if you lived in the USA, on US wages, paying US state and federal taxes, paying for private healthcare, mortgage, increasing energy costs, paying for resident alien car insurance . . . and paying their current gas prices . . . you'd probably be looking for the diesel Golf
Average gas price is not far from ours now - convert for US/Imperial gallon, its a few pence under£7 a gallon. California higher than us!

My office chair is the recaro driver's seat from my beloved, dear departed, Omega MV6.
There are times I have fallen asleep in it, because it is more comfortable than the sofa. (don't ask!).
I have the passenger side in storage, waiting for a base to be attached - and room in my craft room/man cave.
I still regret selling the rear seat, as it would have made a fantastic sofa - but someone made me an offer that was too good to refuse
Hopefully taxed as PLG not commerical?
A few people on my speed awareness course had been tromping on down the national speed limit dual carriageway or motorway in a few difference car derived cans, as well a transit or two, thinking 70mph was okay . . . one ticket through the post later and they revised that to 60mph . . .
