want a logo but racking my brains to think of one but cant get onto paper what i want it to be! has anyone ever had any help with creating a logo??

sort of does and doesn't if that makes sense quite happy to have a logo that over time people relate it to my business. the sort of thing i like is the paul jr designs logo look at there website and your see it. just simple but stands out.
I am interested in this but useless with drawing on pc.
In the past have had rubber stamps with my logo on from Sweden, sew on badges, stickers etc local. Non drawn by me but need to get in to it.
What pc software could be used?

Why not approch the local art collage and offer a cash prize to a class to comeup with a logo based on a brief from you. Support future design people !

Have a search on the internet for other companies who offer similar services to you. See what they have in common to give you some ideas.
IMO something simple is best; when you start looking at having letter heads printed, clothing etc, the fewer colours you have, the cheaper it is.

It all depends on what sort of thing you are after.
Mike will have definitely seen some of my work over the years as he lives in my old stamping ground.
I don't freelance any more (too time poor). You will want a vector file, most probably drawn up in illustrator. Inkscape is a bit horrible. This will enable you to scale to logo to any size without loss of quality, as it is a mathematically driven file format over a raster file which is built up of pixels.
Things to consider, where are you planning on using it, i.e. business card, web, vehicle graphics? Consider all of the uses. Many are swayed by snazzy gradients and subtle textures that will not work in block vinyl or on certain substrates.
I'm more than happy to offer advice and experience, just let me know if you'd like a hand.

I ran an online competition for my logo design. I think it was via the site below, but it has changed a bit since I used it.
Anyway, I put up a smallish 'prize' of about 50 quid, and an explanation of what i wanted. Designers submitted their designs based on my brief, I could comment on them, get them revised / altered and resubmitted etc. I think I ended up with about 20 alternatives to choose from.
Obviously for that kind of money you're not getting world class skill, but it tends to be design students / enthusiastic young professionals, so you do get some good stuff.

In the end I selected one and paid the winning designer who lived somewhere in eastern Europe I think, he then sent it to me in all the formats I wanted. I had a version for the business card, a logo for letterheads etc, and other bits n bobs in case I needed them.

Work with the basic block colours as a primary, and subtle gradients and transparencies can be used where the process allows.
Speaking from graphics, photography and digital being a big part of my past, I really hate these competition sites. They do not reward people that invest in themselves, and spend years training to work in a very tough sector.
Think of it this way, if I offer a small prize for you to design and install some gates for me would you do it? I suspect the answer is no. You could argue that as there is no material cost then it's not the same. Try it with a lawyer, there is no material input there either.
Bean, are you North or South Wilts? If you are North there are some excellent small agencies and skilled freelancers available to you via Bristol Media. South wilts has good access to the agencies that have built up on the back of the training run at Bournemouth Arts Institute. Give a few of them a call and have a chat through. You will get a far better service, and will avoid many of the pitfalls of just picking a design off the shelf. After all a Brand is much more than a logo, and a logo needs to represent the brand.

Yes, when I started my metalwork business I did jobs at no charge to build my portfolio. I think you should expect to have to do this until you can show potential clients what you can do, otherwise they're just going on the promises you give them. Clients paid the material costs, but no more.
It is also one of the few meritocracies you'll ever encounter. Any limited pool, like a university, or company, will only supply you with their interpretation.
I think the site is excellent, I think it works well for both parties provided you don't expect the same service as you'd get for paying hundreds or thousands to a commercial company, and you get to give good feedback on the work of those who both to take the time to enter, even if they don't win the 'prize'. Everyone wins.

Fine Al, just don't bitch when your job gets outsourced to the lowest bidder. Or Chinese wire is kicking the crap out of the market as you can't compete (charging for a living wage in the UK).
It's not the best design gets the money. Clearly you don't actually understand design and production. Unless it is CAD and steel.

If there's a service out there, people are going to use it. If there's money to be had, people are going to chase it. I know for sure that if you had a choice of spending £50 or £££'s maybe more for the same end product that your going to make the obvious decision and opt for spending £50.
And also, £50 for a design student/young enthusiast is probably around half their weekly wage just for submitting a design.
To me it's a no brainer, and everyone's a winner. If I knew of such competitions I would of looked them up before I made my logo

Exactly F.J. Imagine going for a job as a young graduate and showing them a folio of stuff that has actually been selected and paid for by real world clients. That is a serious investment in your future.

Perhaps make something in metal, photograph it and trace the photo to get the basic idea , for instance something like a climbing runner bean going up an old gas lamp or through the top glass of the lamp
Once you get the photo printed on several sheets of paper trace it or cut out the bits you want to keep and paste them on a clean sheet of paper ...
Duplicate the trace and colour in to your desire .. red and green do work well on a reddish brown pole re photograph it, store it in a file and also put a quick link to it on your computer
Copy it to a few headed papers and take them to the printers for your business card . etc. or do your own and save then as individual documnets .
We used our paint shop pro to make our " Guyhirne Gold " using different print script forms to get the first G to run a tail underlining the remainder . Then we inclined it up at about 15 % to show ambition and thought .
You could also take several pictures and learn how to layer them thus enabling you to get your own original art work , there are numerous paint or photo packages that allow you to get outlines of colour groups so they look like cartoon outlines with Buggs bunny type colour in fill blocks .
It's a worthwhile exercise to learn how to do it yourself as it keeps you out the larder or pub
as well as allowing your to be able to use it in other aspect of your craft .I would happily do it for you , though , sadly a for most of the time , a stroke has robbed me of the actual key stroke knowledge and ability to recall what I did 100 seconds ago, so you'll have to get one off the " Dummies guide books ) to show you how to do it and teach yourself.
If you want a proper job, go to someone who's job it is; go to a proper designer.
A bit of software isn't going to give anyone a design ability.
The auction sites / pile 'em high portals, I agree with Bump. They push prices down hard, so that all work goes abroad because no-one can afford to do it here.
These are not filled with hungry young designers grateful for tidbits, they're filled with people trying to make a living. And most of them are in low-wage countries because of the price-driven nature of them.
Those that seem to be here often outsource to those places.
The effects are driving down price which drives out skills from our own country and hugely cheapens quality too. The low price is a short-term short-sight benefit.
I say this from the both sides, having signed onto a couple as a provider and having contracted people through them (the latter against my will and advice; and our experience was much more bad than good as it turned out).
To imagine these places are giving young designers a great start is odd. What they're doing is driving down the scope for jobs and earning potential.
A bit of software isn't going to give anyone a design ability.
