To clarify, Al wasn't suggesting auction sites at all. The site Al linked to is subtly (and massively) different. The price is fixed, not bid down by competing freelancers. The contributors decide whether to submit or not, and the user decides who has the best design. The system operates as a meritocracy, largely unrelated to cost/price, save for the contributors decision to put the work in, in the first place.

That is a significantly different model to the freelancer auction set-ups, which I agree, do seem to moving business to low-cost areas such as Eastern europe and the middle east etc.

Logo design done properly can cost a fortune, but a rubbish logo can put people off just the same.

Essentially what Al was saying is that if you have a budget in mind there will be eager people willing to work for it, and those type of sites allow you to have a possible wealth of talent working for a price you can afford.

If you don't like the offerings you don't pay, simple. let's not turn the forum into a slanging match though eh ?

There a numerous sites that offer logos for about £30 but they are fairly generic and you could maybe edit those or make your own version.

My temporary logo for the missus and my facebook page is attached but I intend to improve on it by making the segments out of different materials - glass / wood / metal / card etc.

Personally simple can be more effective - what about abbreviating it to B M W !!!! You could do a pun type take on the BMW logo ??

Fair comment but the end result seems to me not so different. The merit bit is just a disguise: project owner decides how much they want to pay, rather than finds a fair price from local talent, for the actual work required to complete the job. Cost is inevitably at the forefront of most of these people's wants.

So people have to do design work unpaid, in the hope the project owner selects it. Not many over here can afford the time to do that. And it takes many bids to "win" some work. They're great for people in the far east or eastern Europe though.

I hate these places, but each to their own.
