Loctite - how strong is it?

Loctite is something I have never used...ever!

I'm building a segway and have two electric scooter wheels that have a large 80 tooth sprocket bolted to a bicycle type freewheel. I've welded up the freewheel but now need to have it 'fixed' in both directions.

The thread on the (alloy) hub self-tightened with the freewheel but now it will undo in the other direction. Will Loctite be strong enough to stop it coming undone??? There will be quite a strain on it.

While Loctite is very strong if the correct grade s sed for the application. It's not the best way to overcome this problem.

You either need a keyway, or cross drill and pin the rim to the shaft

Loctite is sold in different grades. I used retainer can't remember the number might have been 601. It has held a gearshift splined shaft solid for the last twenty years. To release it use heat. I.E. a blowlamp.
Loctite is a good product if a little expensive, I believe it has a shelf life, which is a pain.

Most of my stock is from the forces A guy from Loctite used to periodically turn up and relabel any that had "gone out of date"

Thanks for the replies....I realise that a keyway or pinning is best but I cant pin it 'cos the bearing is in the way and have no facilities to do a keyway.

I've seen Loctite 638 high strength retainer on EBAY for £2.75 for a 3ml tube...doesn't sound very much - or a tenner for 50ml ...this may be the stuff I need?

I don't like the idea, Loctite is used to aid the security of a fastener or WHY. What you propose is to rely entirely on Loctite to take the strain. Not a good way forward if you want me to be honest - devise another plan!

You also get other brands, strongest iv ever used is Delta Adhesives stud grade 66 need to heat it to free it off !

After looking again, loctite may have to do....I'll try the red - the motors are ony 24volt 350watts...can't see them breaking a 25 newton bond in a hurry...and this segway will only be used on level ground...that's if I manage to build it...they are pretty complicated beasts!!!

1/ What stops it going solid in the bottle?

2/ is it like super glue - isocyanate stuff like 2K paint?

In my R/C club, many swear by the green locktite to keep flywheels (chainsaw engines) in place after the key has sheared. I have used it and it worked fine.

Thread locker is Anaerobic definition of Anaerobic is it reacts with the absence of oxygen... as in between threads, but what makes thread locker special, the monomers (what makes up the polymers) you have monomers and polymerise them then you have polymers they need to be compressed (without getting in to detail its to do with Vander walls forces and the covalent raidis) but basicly when they make it they put enriched air in the bottle and once opened the oxygen in the air keeps it from going off and also the fact its not compressed and no its not like super glue

I see, this compression thing is the bit I never twigged as you can put some into a little container and close it up so there's no air but it seems to stay liquid for ever.

Vander walls forces - I just remember that word from my days of A level chemistry - a fair few decades ago. (back in the good old days when you held your hand out and the teacher would tip a bit of mercury out for you to roll around and play with
