We have a couple of tanks in a controlled area for insert fitting in BIG bits you can't get in an oven or warm enough via other means.

Come to think of it, we must not be doing so much of it recently - used to see the BOC lorry outside refilling them every week, but not for a while.

Whats the shelf life of that stuff?

In a home/hobby set-up you would be lucky to get a couple of months.
Maybe 3mths+ in a tall, narrow tank.
Veterinary dewar suppliers advertise loss rates of as low as <2%/day but 5% is probably the best you will see in a real-life application

A certain place I may or may not have worked at was a heavy user of liquid nitrogen. One of the processes used raw material that came in small, plastic, screw top bottles. I understand that it was a popular pastime during the night shift to partly fill these bottles with LN2, put the top on and roll them under the door of an occupied toilet cubicle...

I've seen strawberry ice cream made in no time flat. Bowl of cream, throw in chopped strawberries, pour on liquid nitrogen, stir, etc voila. I can confirm it was delicious too!

When I was working in Angola we would have 4x 8000 ltr tanks on deck for leak testing, on big shutdown we'd have another 8 on a boat close by too. Used to pump it from the tanks upto 400 bar..Sometimes there was a trace of helium in it, as its very good at finding tinny leaks. Dread to think how much it would have cost!

I tried making solid co2 with an extinguisher into a bag, but it was a pita and just bought a box instead, delivery through the post.

I recall our testing lab doing charpy test's at low temp, and IIRC they used alcohol
with dry ice to get lower.
