Liquid nitrogen fail....

I had to push this non concentric spindle into a bearing today with an interference fit. I found some liquid nitrogen to help....

But didn't get it in fast enough, it got bound up on the way in.

Finished the job with a hammer

Been there, done that, and managed to destroy the bearing hammering the shaft in…….

Luckily I was able to get a long socket underneath to support the inner race of the bearing.

Interference fitting is able to be a rather fraught and stressful business.
That, I know.....

A couple of months ago I was asked to weld a handle on a nitrogen flask so I knew there was some around here. Checked with the stores manager who said how much do you want, went along to a storage room that had ~10, 50l nitrogen flasks in it. Shook a few till he found one with some still left in it.

Whats the shelf life of that stuff?

I've no idea how long it lasts in the flasks, some had valves on top that were blowing off, others just a bung. I'll get a pic on Thursday and ask.

All manner of shielding. It's the cheapest gas out there.
when they are going for oxygen, the nitrogen comes out as well.
Explosion proofing area's with paint & stuff, furnace atmospheres, etc.

The cheapest cold-hit and the most convenient, comes in the form of a CO2 fire extinguisher.
Plus some cardboardy-polystyreney insulating boxy stuff..
With a determined intent to deal with the task in hand, obviously...

Not dismissing Liquid N2, having used it in the work place many many times in very large quantities. If never had any issues using the oven and freezer method in the home workshops situation!

Liquid nitrogen has a pretty limited shelf life, especially compared to CO2 extinguishers...
It's a nice thought to have the stuff, but a 200+C interference fit is possible with CO2 and a bit of educated heat application..
Best to calculate the interference dimensions and machine appropriately first, though....

We used to heat & cool some parts that had a very strong interference fit.

I tried making solid co2 with an extinguisher into a bag, but it was a pita and just bought a box instead, delivery through the post.
