My local Netto had digital verniers last week for £3.99 a pair.
That's probably cheaper than replacing the batteries.
At the moment (yeah I know it probably won't last) they're as accurate as my manual Sykes Pickavant ones.
I don't like the whole chinese manufacturing thing, but what chance does Brit industry have ?

Sorry but lidl loosely translates as crap...........
I agree some of their stuff is poor but some is very good for diy use or as a backup for light trade use. I don't know what a chippy would make of it if your Makita or Dewalt packed up and you got out your Parkside though
. If you need a tool to do a job every now and then it'll do fine but day in day out work, no chance, but then again it's aimed at the diyer not pro user. I did get some 'F-clamps' from aldi though, not bad at all considering they're only 6 quid for 5 clamps. I've had one set for ages and was so impressed I bought 2 more sets. Not in the same league as the Carver or Piher ones recommended to me but good for light duty stuff and all 3 sets probably cost me less than one carver clamp. Still got loads in there too if anyone wants any.

Funny i don't rate dewalt stuff very much, not found to much of there kit stands up to industrial fabrication use.
Love things like cheap G clamps great for light use holding bits while you weld, and if they get accidently welded to the job it don't matter. Just can't be done with things like cheap grinders etc that smoke, when used hard

Must admit i have a leaning towards metabo powertools have owned several grinders, good tools but not cheap, but then they do last. so i suppose they are cheap, if you take the money spent over the time they last

101% agree Darren.
I cant think of one dewalt powertool we have at work.
Seriously over priced and over ratted junk.
Mate of mine had some trouble with his dewalt 9"grinder the other day....
He was using it, disc caught a little, and the nut broke into two pieces.
Failiure of the most important part of the tool, very dangerous aswell.

I often found what seems to be good for the builders, isn't so good for fabrication. Possibly because wood etc is much softer than steel. Like everything it depends how much you use your tools and how hard you use them. I do have a preference to metabo power tools because the ones i have previously owned have. Take for example a the dewalt 4.5inch angle grinder 900w input , with output power of 410w and priced around £44.00 or the metabo 700w input grinder with output of 460w (so nice of dewalt to make a power ineffecient motor to add to global warming) price at about £54 thats £10 more expensive. by the way one manufacturer gives a 3yr warrenty of there grind the other a year. I let you work out which is which. As far as i know one is made in the far east and one isn't.

It won't make a difference to most people.
I bought 'em 'cos they were cheap, if they weren't there, and I could only buy expensive british verniers, I'd do without.
My brother works at an engineering firm which make internal large bore micrometers and their prices are stupid.
Blame the chinese all you like, our standard of living is so high in this country it costs an arm and a leg to hire a full time employee, those costs show in the price of the finished product. Unless everyone is willing to take a huge pay cut, that's the way it is
Going back to what started this thread. Last year I bought a 4½" angle grinder stand from lidl, got it home, opened the box & after assemling it decided that for £6 it was a handy, half decent bit of kit. 
Went back to lidl & bought the stores entire stock (about 60 of them), stuck em on ebay @ £20 a shot buy it now price & made meself some nice pocket money in just a few weeks.
Didn't get a single neg feedback.

Thats the great thing about Ebay, full of thousands of people who havent got a clue about what something costs, and think because its on ebay it must be cheap. Good job they arn't to well informed dafydd other wise you wouldn't have made any money. But well done on making a few quid
If only I could find something to do the same again, then I could get myself a decent mig from someone like weldequip.
