Well I think the silly germans are still upset about Puppy dog so I doubt we will get much worth buying in the middle but, no great loss its all just chinese and no more expensive on ebay.

Yes thats true, but i enjoy a trip into Lidl anyway, rather than buying online which between PD and c19 is becoming difficult.

The middle of Lidl here in Ammanford Wales was turned back to front a fortnight ago to prevent you buying so called non essential items . I managed to get out a small £50 or so table top electric oven ...not a word was said as it went through the till .

It was definitely an essential item...it warms my mancupboard and cured a couple of jewelry grade silicone moulds for lost wax casting wax. Tried to do it in the kitchen oven ... it's essential it's done out in the mancupboard , the stink it made in the kitchen put my life in danger from my wife.

The digital calipers from lidil aren't too bad, I know Chris Higgins of land rover owners tool box now trailer fitters toolbox fame had a pair that he sent off to the workshop calibration specialist and they came back as having passed and well within spec for such a tool.

I killed my set of Lidl callipers by getting cast iron dust in them, even after stripping and cleaning they were way off, reading 30% ish low. I replaced them with a set of ip54 rated callipers from Amazon which probably cost three times what the Lidl ones had done.

The Lidls here made a statement that only essential items were allowed for sale, and they would not be selling anything non-essential in the middle isles. But our government dopes said that products needed for maintenance or ppe were essential. So the net result is nothing has changed at all.

My local Lidl has a laser distance finder on offer among a half dozen other tools, including an angle grinder chopsaw stand. I bought one of these years ago and have used it often It worked a treat to fabricate drainage leach lines for behind my back garden retaining walls. Worth the £14.99 price just for the convenience of it.

They had electric hoists in too, 70 squid, look ok but i don't have any work for one.

When has that ever stopped us from buying tools?

I had an online shop for years till I gave it up when I had a stroke that scrambled my grey matter for few years.

Is it unfair or just a progression for intelligent retailers ? there's now't to stop bricks & mortar retailers selling on line if they really want to , they can even do it via a ready made shop like Amazon or eBay . Where there's a will there's usually a way .

I was talking to a local B&M retailer doing hardware & small tools a couple of months ago . Found him by going to a small local plant hire company who said ... if you want a brick hammer go to Jones on the high street just before the traffic light s Tim (?) He can get you any tool within 24 hrs at the same or better price than online. His price was the same as Amazon ...... less a £7 packing & delivery charge
Found his old shop a bit like the four candle ironmongers shop crossed with Ronnie's other Open All Hours retail shop . Found out he's having his busiest period in 40 years . I sked if he'd have the goods posted to me but he said if you come here just after the delivery run there isn't any £7 delivery charge , you can pay me tomorrow .

Got one of them from the same place too , had it of 15 yrs or more .. great for cutting 50 off 20 x 400 mm rebar road pin lengths . Might be getting used again in anger for another set of road pins in the not too distant future.

BTW wish him all the best we need more of this and they need supported if the high street is ever to return in any recognisable form.

I bought one years ago, it did indeed sit unused until Mrs. Zx9 bought a wardrobe that was too big to go up the stairs into our then new loft conversion bedroom. A gibbet was constructed outside the Juliet widow and the Lidl winch saved the day, has it been used since? No but it earned its keep that day.

It's quadruple postage and signed for delivery with a British passport as ID anywhere a millimeter over the English border & into to Scotland .

Bought a compass and (god knows why, i have a load of them already) a micrometer. They are not bad at all, the Micrometer is smooth in operation and zero's ok. The frame is Iron, not aluminium or zinc. The lock works but thats a bit stiff, and it comes in a plastic case. The anvils are carbide. Whats not to like for E7.99 ?

The scriber is finished a bit roughly but works fine. It comes with a scribers thats carbide. Again easily worth the E7.99

Place I used to work at had a standards department where they calibrated all and sundry stuff for quality standards. I asked the guy who did mic's to run my 7 quid lidl vernier against standards and how they compared to the very expensive works units. Result was, well within tolerance . The only comment was they are not as robustly constructed and probably wouldn't last as long in a rough steelworks environment .
