stick it in the freezer it does work all your doing is giving that hard drive more stick than what it really needs if it has failed

theres 2 types ide and sata together or both sata drives

the ide one has a movable power supply would work with most hard drives that was sata but the ide one had an issue with certain types of hard drive i just cant remember which one that gave an issue

the other thing i had that type in 2009 and i bought 2 of them one got sold as a good idea to a friend the other well brother cadged that one and i said id buy another guess what i still havent got one as of yet

i also like it because it brings the usb slots up to the desktop but please note only works when its powered up nothing works unless it is hard drive is plug and play also has a handy copy feature but i never used that part of it

I have a similar device I've used to good effect in the past [in conjunction with Norton System Works] to resurrect data from hard drives, and iirc on one occasion to bring one back to life by doing a system Restore, although I think that was software related problem, not a disc with bad sectors.

If the OP wants to PM me his details, I'd be prepared to send it to him on a loan basis.

Well thanks to everybody for the suggestions, and in particular to Windy Miller who helped me enormously (a true gentleman) and slim_boy_fat for offering to loan me a reader.

I did manage to recover some files, but the most important was corrupted, but that's life. I'll backup more frequently from now on!

One final question - I'm just about to buy a new HDD so that computer can work again, are there any I should be getting, or any that I shouldn't?
Is it false economy to buy anything other than a brand new one?
And does the make matter?

And invest in some sort of cloud storage. Dropbox is good, and so is Microsoft OneDrive. Then get some sort of basic backup software that will automatically scan your files and make a copy (to the cloud) of any new ones, and any that have been modified since the last backup. That way you won't forget!

Having a browse on eBay for a 750gb (same as I had) prices range from £34 to nearly £50 - does anybody know what 're-certified' means - is it basically a used one that's been tested as working, rather than new?

most are just as good but i prefer to use western digital or seagate hard drives as theyve been around the longest

seagate wouldnt go above 5200 rpm but western digital did they went to 7200rpm seagate soon followed soon after

however there is differences now to hard drives theres green blue and black green is electric economy blue is medium and black run at full speed
green 5200 or 5600 rpm
blue is 7200rpm
black is 10,000rpm

the other difference now is you can buy a ssd drive solid state drive which run even faster though the down side is the price to gigabyte

I've an 80gig and i've only filled up half its space.

a lot of people do with films and alike, I have an iomega screen play 1TB and its on it way to being full

Well I'm not into DL films nor am I into playin silly games on comp.

But I do like a game of chess and findin a chess player these days is like looking for a needle in a haystack....so its playin on line via pogo.com.

chess is probably a rare game now, I don't down load but I don copy dvd's onto the screen play that way you have hundreds of videos to watch all in one place, and I cant stand computer games

i am daniel ive got about 10 tb full of stuff

about 1 gb full of family photos and videos

theres just one thing with big hard drives if they go down you lose alot so rule of thumb change them every 2-3 years for new hard drives

I thought that when I first bought the laptop (I think the one it was replacing at the time was 40gb) but it's surprising how it filled up.
I'm hoping to simply transfer everything from the last backup I did which is onto an external HDD, and it will need the 750 gb unfortunately.
