Lending tools out

Ime a tad over 50 and all my life ive never lent my tools to anyone..family,friends even the pope as i see them as an important part of survival.Well i get a knock on my gates by the next doors young son who must be about 20 and goes to uni so against my better judgement i for once fell for the "any chance you could blah blah blah" so i handed over my 18V Makita drill and a step drill for what should of been 5 mins..this was sunday...So now ive got to knock on the door of the spotty faced 6ft piece of mucus and ask for my gear back...Never again will i lend Who else has a "no lending" policy with there tools and why??

Get them back quickly before he lends them to his mates! I suspect everyone on here has a policy of not lending tools. Last I lent were to the farmer to save him a 2 mile walk home to get his. Never got them back - he said he lost them. Time before that was a torque wrench. Don't remember who I lent it to.

depends it works both ways, but mainly only too my really good friends, and people that i know that arent rooters and will treat it with the same respect as if it were there own . .

I once lent my brother in law my roof rack and he sold his car with my roof rack still attached. He also burnt my battery charger out recharging his battery, every night for 5 months to save buying a new battery. He has mellowed now though and if I lend anything out I usually come as an attachment.

lend tools to my son and thats about it, have some crapy old stuff ill lend to 1 or 2 more on a rare occasion and have kept hold of it for that purpose.
but people just dont look after it and my thoughts on it are if you need one then buy one i had to

I usually only lend to people I know very well. I've been burned before a long time ago with precision measuring equipment that wasn't so precision on its return, and as I used it as part of my livelihood it shaped my willingness to lend my tools out.....

Theres too many folk with little regard for items the have not had to put their blood sweat and tears into!
Remember you have every right to decline when requested! sometimes hard as it can be! Once is enough for buying....

At one time, upon being asked if I would loan a tool, I used to say, yeah, no problem, can you afford to replace it if you damage or loose it ? Now I just say no, can't be bothered with a debate about it.

Only some tools and only to a select few. I have a board in the workshop with date,name and what was leant. I also do the same for anything I borrow.

And regardless of whether it is leant or borrowed it is giving back in the condition it was last seen or it automatically becomes "yours" and a new one is supplied

My neighbour is one of those who knows I have ladders, pressure washer, lawnrake, cement mixer etc and he simply thinks he can use mine and never consider buying his own

For the first 3 months I did lend him stuff...then it started to bug me...so, told him I thought it only fair that everytime he uses an item it's life is shortened, I don't mind but in future will expect a couple of quid every time towards the day the item needs replaced...result...never been back

Anything in my workshop over 2 tonnes is fair game to borrow, if they can shift it. Anything below that is considered a consumable, and they can buy their own - I had to.

I don't lend tools but in the past I have been known to lend (very good) mates one of my bikes, cars or the van they have always came back in the condition they were lent.
We had a saying 'you bend it you mend it'.

u can choose your friends . cant choose relatives i lent an electric wallpaper stripper out. it came back with the outer plastic case all buckled the stupid git put it on the gas ring to warm up quicker
