I suppose the thing to do is lend tools that are just about to break anyway, so when they do you can (try to) get a new one in return.
I lent one of my customers a hard disk drive once to fit in one his customers' computers. After it was clear I wasn't going to get it back I helped myself to it. Got an irate phonecall saying he was going to report me to the police for the theft of data. I then pointed out that the data was still onsite on a pile of floppy disks. Never heard anything since.
