£50 dellivery flat rate for steel tube

I just ordered some cds tube to make the forks for my leading links to replace the telescopic stanchions on my trike (steering is so heavy it makes a long windy road painful). I wanted 40mm od, best I could get was 41.28, with plenty of wall thickness to allow for machining a taper down to 40mm. Yes there is 40mm od out there but it's 2mm wall..
Anyway, the only place I could get what I wanted was Steelexpress, £50 flat rate delivery!!
Anyway, bit the bullet, job for the winter.

A couple of weeks ago a close friend asked me to make a couple of brackets to hold a trellis . Usual deal ,give me a drawing and source the matl. 4 x1 mtr of 50x6mm came to £80.00 delivered . He delivered steel and paid a down payement on my labour . Job done ,waiting for collection and a further 2 jars of home made Damson jam. I know my worth.

If it gets you what you exactly what you want, worth it. When you think of their fuel, wages, vehicle wear & tear etc., it ain't a vast amount.

Is there a collection option? If there is. Calculate your fuel cost, Add a bit more for VED, insurance, wear and tear. THEN workout your hourly rate and how long there and back. Put them all together and you will find the delivery is probably cheaper!

Thats what I do - just add some angle/box /flat strip plate on order.

Then everything I make for myself - just looks the same from stock - "too heavy/too big" - but I use it up in the end!

I bought the tube for my forks off eBay. They do various sizes, from what I remember.

Tube came today, not the 1.6m I ordered, but 3m. Obviously not worth cutting that extra bit off. Maybe helps me in my attempts to taper then bend it though. Is this going to be happy bending in my machine mart bender - should I heat it to cherry red first? Any thoughts ?

Unless it’s a rotary bender, that draws the tube around a mandrel to bend it, you’ll probably find it just collapses the tube once you go past a few degrees.

What wall thickness did you get eventually? I’ve had some success in the past packing the tube with sand, tamping down real hard, tack a piece of scrap on each end to hold the sand in, then bend like that.
How far do you need to bend it?

There are other ways to lighten the steering on a trike without making new forks. Far less work options, like angled back risers, wider yokes extending the distance from the steering stem to the fork legs, raked yokes too. Or simply wider bars

It's the standard hydraulic bender with pre made formers and rollers. the formers stop the tube widening and collapsing. Like a cheap staffa bender.
Wall thickness is 4mm, bend probably 30 degrees or so, not drawn it up fully yet. No reason not to use the sand fill method.

Thanks, bars are w i d e e allready, and I don't see anything outside re - angling the head achieving anything with the existing tubes.

Its all about rake and trail. Trike dynamics are very different to a bike. Sliding the forks up a bit reduces both rake and trail, lightening steering. Lowering the rear helps too. Moving the bars back a couple of inches by shaped risers adds tiller effect reducing effort required to steer a trike.

Rake and trail, low speed steering wobble, yes all interacting and not guaranteed to fix the issue. Leading links are, pretty much, so that is the way I'm going. The trike will keep its length, so not look like its been in a front end accident - sure, leading links aren't pretty, but they work.
