lawnmower wouldt run

got a decent mountfield lawnmower given supposedly only the starting chord and spring gone . took the top off filled it with fuel and used a socket on the rechargeable drill to run it . would it hell start cleaned the carb out new plug nowt sent of for a new coil just in case and just the same . took the plug out stuck me finger in and no compression . checked the oil and none in hardly . topped it up and checked again good compression plug back in tried starting and off it went. great ive scored . yea till it started smoking and filled the garage with blue smoke .its an oil puffer so 18 quid down on bits and a few hours wasted ohh well was worth a try

give it a shot of two stroke let it cool off and then run it again , give that a few goes , incase its just a stuck ring , also when its running pop the oil filler off and see what the crank case pressure is like , but a few goes on heat and cool cycle may just do the trick .

vintage restoration easy project ,,, is the V5 in your name , or could it be applied for ,,,,

take the head off and look at the bore, only takes 5 minutes, and you wont need a hew gasket, low oil? might have been seized and freed off when it cooled, if the bore is scored it is a dumper inless you have a spare engine, if not, rings are stuck!

Probably only had one lady owner from new , very low millage , never rallied or raced.

I had a Mountfield with a briggs engine. Had oil end up in the exhaust after being tipped sideways to access blade. Didn't smoke till the exhaust heated up, burnt off after a few mins.
Unbolt exhaust and check for oil.

Yep same here. Tipped mine sideways to clean the underside of the deck and it smoked out the whole neighbourhood. HUGE clouds of smoke. You gotta tip them up on their nose or all the oil goes into the exhaust.

Low compression is usually valve gaps. Pull the exhaust off, then the valve cover, get a thin flat file and grind a vee wedge end on it so you can wiggle it in between the pushrod and valve stem then file yourself some clearance about 10 or 15 thou will do it.

Nope. Clearance is set by filing or grinding. You can do it the long way by stripping the head off or spend 10 minutes with a file. I got my Mountfield because it had no compression and was heading for the skip. Had it 8 yrs now still going strong.

I have used Frost no smoke oil in a few old engines, it does work, use the thinnest grade they sell, it is thicker than the quoted grade, it is not cheap but as I say it does work, It causes problems in the winter in VVT engines so not good for a "modern" car, a customer used it in a 2001 BMW 318i with an N42 engine, not BMW's finest engine, made in Hall Green so that may be part of the problem, caused problems with hydraulic lifters pumping up in the winter but it stopped the massive oil consumption and smoke at idle when the cat cooled off, drained it out and refilled with the correct oil and a few weeks later it was back to burning oil and smoking,
