No capacitor does the burn mark on the switch look normalYes, the insulation in these old motors does get brittle. It's not impossible to put new tails on though, or even just slide some new insulation over the existing ones. Use a heat resistant fibreglass insulation or, at a push, heatshrink. Now you're inside the motor you can see the centrifugal switch which oens once the motor has started and begun to come up to speed. Its only purpose is to make sure the motor s pins in the right direction. Without it it's 50/50 as to which way it will turn. Is there a capacitor mounted on the exterior of the motor?

I'll have a look tomorrow if the resistance goes up do I just swap the two wires aroundRight, you have what's called a split phase motor. The image I posted still holds true, it's just that there is no capacitor. I think decca is correct. As a check, do you have a multi-meter? If so set it to a low Ohms range and then connect across the two red wires then open the switch. There should still be continuity but the resistance will go up.
Is that the two red wiresView attachment 164566
A is (say) what you have now, B & C will run in the opposite direction. Choose whichever is easier to wire
That's way I was wanting to know as I didn't know if they were for the start or the switchThe way I saw it was you have to change the direction of the electricity running through the start windings. The red wires are connected to the start winding so if you swap them over that reverses the flow of electricity in the start winding and therefore reverses the motor.
Bit of a simplistic view of it but it helped me get my head round it.
I did. Those single phase VFD's are not compatible with the bulk of single phase motors. Look at the incompatible list then look at the application list.
