you are confusing busting a nut and cracking a nut

cheaper to buy a decent second hand chuck complete

Cheaper to buy a brand new one, with 3sets of jaws. The 8" 3jaw a bought a while back is very good. All for less than a set of PB jaws for my old one

thats a shame, i went for a sanou special 4 jaw fully expect to have to fettle but at the cost they are its not a worry

at prat money i would not be happy having to fettle

Or in real money 0.12mm, even the cheapest of the Chinese stuff is closer and occasionally I manage to get better

Confidence has nothing to do with it.

It's about ability imo, and I will always maintain that 3 jaw chucks are inferior to 4 jaws for someone who knows what they're doing.

I've got both 3 and 4 jaw chucks plus the collet system that comes as standard with a 1940's Smart & Brown. I use whatever is relevant at the time. I am also missing the outside jaws for the 3 jaw
I am always looking for an old second hand one but will probably end up with an import.
I have been turning for over 40 years but heyho, if I am an apprentice so be it
